Best places to place job advert?

I'm looking to hire a PT assistant to help me in my business - ideal for someone local who is looking for daytime hours.

So far, I've contacted the local job centre, put the feelers out with friends and family, and will be placing adverts in local shops(!). Will consider job websites too, although these do attract fees.

Any further suggestions?

Gumtree
Advert in local paper

Well done for going for it, I think you might have been a little unsure.

Mumsnet isn't that expensive and will attract those looking for p/t, appreciate that we aren't all local to you, wherever that is! And you can probably post something for free on netmums in the local notice board section.

Social media if you are on any. What about online wedding forums as that is your business (i think).

You could try online jobs boards but I have found reed.co.uk/monster.co.uk will deliver you 000s of people for a general assistant job for c£175, which can be overwelming, time consuming and might not deliver you the right person. Be very clear where you are based.

Does your local NCT/PTA offer a way to contact mums - not that it has to be mums!

Good luck!

Hi Watersign76

Thank you.... yes, I've now committed to going ahead with hiring someone... I think it's the best option given the circumstances (i.e. due date looming ahead!) and I certainly can't continue to work the same kind of hours. In truth, I'm finding it a little difficult to think that I will need to relinquish control. But, it's the logical thing to do really.

Thanks for your suggestions.... Had a look at the Mumsnet jobs board - looked a little lonely, which I found a little off-putting and my sister has used this before and didn't get a great response. But, will def look at the netmums site. I've used reed/monster before (in a previous job when recruiting) and they were ok, but not very targeted as you say, but was going to consider them in a couple of weeks if I didn't have a good shortlist at that stage. I'm a member of NCT - will contact them, good idea. And yes, doing the social media too, which has resulted in a couple of enquiries so far.

Already had a few CVs via the Job Centre ad, which is good. Although, I'm very surprised at what applicants consider to be a covering letter. I'm sure I don't have impossible standards, really I don't!

Trade press or websites or specialist agencies if any.

I'm going through the same thing at the moment - for short-term you could try peopleperhour - it's free to advertise on there (employee pays a percentage) - I advertised for my first employee there a few days ago (v specific location/skillset and have had a few possible responses, so worth a look - could get far more for a general post. And costs you nothing!

breadandbutterfly - it's a permanent position, so not sure PPH is quite right. That said, I have used them before to find a freelancer and it did the job.

The role does not necessarily require any specialist skillset (more organisational, customer service, admin skills - but are more generic, I guess). Personal qualities and personality are both key though.

Don't suppose you are in Glasgow are you? Grin

Saffra · 16/06/2011 10:04

Geordieminx - no, the business is in Cheshire - sorry!

Veritythebrave - will PM you. Don't think I'm supposed to be using this thread for recruiting per se!

Oh, just saw you're in Flyde. It's quite far!
