Can anyone recommend a CV writing service?

That's it really. Can Anyone?

In particular, has anyone used CV4.biz? They seem very cheap (good), but there might be a reason (bad).

and where are you - cos in if in london women like us were doing CV workshops which looked good

Butterbur · 08/06/2011 09:57

Am not in London, sadly, MovingandScared, but I will look for the book. Thx.

I'd be wary of anyone who offers a CV service without a lot of interaction with you. I sometimes get asked to do career coaching for executives and always spend a lot of time with clients discussing their skills, strengths (and weaknesses and how to deal with discussing them), attitudes and motivators. I can usually tease out of people skills they hadn't realised they had - women are especially bad at identifying skills that they have and often undervalue skills. Because your CV isn't a static document but is growing all the time a good service will leave clients with a framework for tailoring every CV to the role they are applying for and integrating future roles into the framework.

Some of the really cheap CV services use a stock of phrases and just cut and paste. They're often really easy for experienced recruiters to spot (and file under bin).

Killer CVs is a really good book. Your library will almost certainly have a fairly good section on CVs and interview skills.

Two votes for Killer CVs, then. I have ordered it!

Have you tried asking friends if they can help you with some advice? My DH has done several CVs for friends, and it has really paid off for them. As Helenagrace says, because he knows them he has a pretty good idea of their skills and their strengths.

pointissima · 10/06/2011 13:26

You can do this so much better yourself than any service, because you really know yourself. Helenagrace is right.

I read a lot of cvs, so a few hints, which you may want to ignore

  1. Be clear and put things in a logical and/or chronological order
  1. Check all spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  1. Keep it brief! Employers are interested in your qualifications, experience and skills, not in flowery, meaningless descriptions of yourself "I am a goal-oriented team-centric individual at home driving forward to meet targets" etc.
  1. None of your experience is irrelevant. That includes experience with children and in voluntary and community organisations.
  1. Think about what your prospective employer needs and is likely to be looking for and angle your presentation towards that.
  1. Don't lie

Good luck!

Reading with interest. Dh had his done. Can find out co name if you really want. I think it cost quite a few hundred.
I was not impressed with it, to be honest.
It was like 3 or 4 pages long. which seemed too long to me, for starters. and the first place was all namby pamby words to describe his personality etc, (instead of having a short paragraph at the nbeginning, describing yourself under the title 'profile') . then the next few pages knuckled down to some of the fab things he had done in his previous positions.
But I tell you what, every operations manager position he has gone for since, he got an interview.
so it must be good. and quite a few agancies have said it was.
so that just goes to show what i know !!

Butterbur · 10/06/2011 13:48

I've booked myself on a Women Like Us CV workshop next week - 3 hours for £39.50.

Oblomov, I would be interested in the company your DH used, for future reference.

I can do a free CV write u for you just that you need to recommed me to others if you like it :P

RedButtonhole · 10/04/2015 00:17

Have you looked at the 'myworldofwork' website?

It has some good advice about tailoring your CV to the type of work you are applying for and has a CV builder thing where you can fill it in more like an application form and it gives you a CV at the end. Its free and might be worth a look!

EBearhug · 10/04/2015 00:21

John Lees, "Why You?" is also good on CVs, and covers returning to work after a career break.

tallwivglasses · 20/04/2015 21:31

I hope you don't mind me hijacking, OP...I've just been browsing this topic as I have to write a CV in a hurry (I haven't needed one for years).

I had a look at 'myworldofwork' (and I hope it'll work because I'm not in Scotland, it only gives Scottish regional options) BUT - do I really have to have a 'personal profile' and 'strengths' section? Can I not just put in work experience and qualifications and leave the other stuff to a covering letter? (There's no application form).

A bit rusty here - but I really want this job!

tallwivglasses · 20/04/2015 21:33

Oh, I didn't realise it was a recently-updated zombie thread either Blush

Oh well...anyone?

enyaheadress · 13/06/2017 13:52

Hello, I found your message on an old thread about writing CVs. Do you write CV.?

enyaheadress · 13/06/2017 13:54

Hello, I found your response to an old thread about writing CVs. Did you end up finding the help you need? I'm transitioning to work and looking for a CV writer/ service.
