If so, what do you do?

I feel like I'm surrounding by workplace negativity at the moment and would love to hear some more positive stories.

i work in a small private school for gifted kids with learning problems. so they're really bright, always want to know more, but lots of adhd/dyslexia etc.
i love it - it's a school that really wants to accept people for the individuals that they are. i also love that i'm not bound by govt targets etc & can just say to a kid 'you can do a drawing to show you understand the poem' instead of forcing them to meet certain key skills assessments.
they also do 'proper' work like essays, but i get to choose when that's appropriate etc.

as well as that, i make cakes etc for my own little part time co. i quite like going to market & meeting oddballs chatting to the customers.

I work providing IT support for research in Mental Health - I advise on data security and data protection, train people how to use databases and build their own Powerpoint presentations, I build websites and act as translator between researchers and their IT department, turning plain English into fluent Geek and back again. I also design promotional posters and other materials and edit our organisation's newsletter.

I love it because there is a history of depression in our family, because Mental Health research has been getting some joined-up thinking and funding at last, and because the work is so varied - I'm a jack of all trades, I never know what's going to come leaping out of the woodwork. If I won the Lottery, I'd quit, because someone else would need the pay more - but I'd come back term time, on a volunteer basis, and I wouldn't claim a penny in expenses either.

I am a CPN and yes, I love my job and have wonerful colleagues. BUT, I am being ground down by the immense (non paper) paperwork and target driven culture of the NHS that means I see less and less of the patients I work with. God help us if the Health and Social Care Bill gets through. Sad

dontrunwithscissors · 03/06/2011 13:11

I love my job! I walk in to work (or my study - I can work from home a lot) with a smile on my face and a bounce in my step. Grin I'm a University lecturer.

thomasbodley · 03/06/2011 13:23

I don't totally love my job, but I'd give it 8/10 most days.

I'm a director at a creative agency - we do everything from the graphic design of packaging to advising secretaries of state on public strategy and media presentation, although the bulk of our work is advertising.

It's interesting, intellectually stimulating work with fascinating people, both clients and staff. I can also work from home a lot (hence so much MN)! The downsides - I hate pitching (a massive thing at my level), the late nights at focus groups, and the business travel. I'm also one of very few women at this level and convinced I'm paid less than my male counterpart, so the politics and alpha male type backstabbing do get me down.

I'm slowly working on changing career and opening an online shop, but we'll see if I manage it.

balia · 03/06/2011 13:41

Love my job, I'm a teacher, every day is different, and I am privileged to work with young people; they face such huge pressures and challenges but are still thoughtful, kind and optimistic, generally. I also love my subject so it's a double bonus. Obviously there are issues with pay, pensions, work/life balance, bloody stupid health and safety, government interference and 'targets' that ignore the reality of children's lives - but hey, nothing's perfect!

cvchap · 03/06/2011 19:45

I LOVE my job. I manage events. Everything from award ceremonies and conferences to town shows and 10k runs. I'm due back shortly after maternity leave and although I feel terribly guilty for returning and leaving my son, I can't help but look forward to it too!

I'm lucky that I do something I love. What do you love to do? Cook? Draw? Play sports? Clean even! Make a career out of something you love. That's my advice.

scarlettsmummy2 · 03/06/2011 19:50

I really enjoy my job. I work with young people who have left school with few or no qualifications get into work. I meet with employers and i also do some life skills training with the young people so it is very varied. However, I only work 24 hours a week so i think that stops it getting boring. The downside is the pay is crap. I used to earn three times as much as a Recruitment Consultant, but I had no life and my boss was a bitch.

MrsVidic · 03/06/2011 19:53

I love my job, I'm deputy mgr of a supported accommodation for homeless people / care leavers. I love helping people to help themselves with no red tape bollocks I'd get in the Nhs. I love working as I deal with Nything from drug rehab to people with sn.

CalamityKate · 03/06/2011 19:54

Bit sad really, but I'm a cleaner and I love it!

Haven't been doing it long, and wish I'd done it years ago.

Still can't say I'd still do it if I won the lottery though Grin

therugratref · 03/06/2011 19:56

I am a nurse in the NHS. I love my job, the current financial situation it a bitch but I love the challenge of still making my unit run smoothly despite the bastards in offices.

FrumpyPumpy · 03/06/2011 19:58

I love my job. I'm an account director in an advertising agency. I work with one lovely client who is a great challenge. I have a fabulous team, and the company is great to work for. I work flexibly. Only downside is my 3 hour commute each day (not each way though!).

Bettyblackeye · 06/06/2011 19:40

I'm a district nurse also in the nhs. I love my patient contact but loathe the paperwork and government cuts. We are currently not recruiting for our vacancies and the pressure is immense. I run an out of hours service which just can't be run safely on the cuts that are taking place. Our managers don't give a shite either.

voodoomunkee · 06/06/2011 19:48

I work in a charity, running a service for children and their families affected by sensory disabilities, before that I worked in the same charity with the adults services. I love my job. I love the diversity of every day, the opportunity to get out there and do some great activities, have fun and still be able to walk away feeling like the work we do has made a difference! I have to admit I am looking to retrain though, simply because of the work I have been doing for so long has led to me wanting to be involved in the not so fun side of life. Still want to work with the same sort of people though! I didn't plan to do this, I fell into it and it has literally been one of the luckiest things that has ever happened to me!

purepurple · 06/06/2011 19:50

I really enjoy my job. I work in Early Years and get to spend all day with very funny, entertaining toddlers.
What I don't like is people asuming I am thick and can't spell (I'm not and I can) or that I am doing it because I can't do anything else.

dannyblanchflower · 10/06/2011 17:39

I know what you mean purple - I moved from teaching Y6 to Foundation Stage (by choice) and some parents thought I'd been demoted!

MarshaBrady · 10/06/2011 17:42

Yes I love what I do (creative and strategy stuff / two different things). Get to work when I want. If I could I would do more of first career. But will get into it more as youngest gets older.

Dh does too, he has a great job.

LRDTheFeministDragon · 10/06/2011 17:44

I love what I do! Smile

I'm a medievalist PhD student and it is great - I work fairly long days (8-10) but can do a lot of it at home on the sofa/ on my balcony in the sun, with breaks when I want and I really, really enjoy (most) of the work. I get to look at beautiful old manuscripts and to find out about the people who owned them - it's really lovely work, I feel very lucky. And I can plan a lot of my own time, so though I need to get the work done, usually if I want to take a day off it is simple.

onclefestere · 10/06/2011 17:44

I love what I do Grin linguistics lecturer. Shame the Government has flushed UK University system down the loo....

basingstoke · 10/06/2011 17:48

I love my job. I'm head of science in a challenging school. I feel like I make a difference every day. Not loving the workload but wouldn't swap.

FlorenceDaphne · 10/06/2011 17:55

I'm a teacher. There are days when I rue the day I entered the profession and am often in tears over the awfulness of my job.

But sometimes, like today, my year sevens produced, totally by themselves, extended writing which was miles better than they could do in September, and when I told them this, their delight was delicious.

And my year eights are making a movie about themselves- we had so much fun, and I laughed so much my stomach hurt.

And on days like that I love my job.
