I haven't been on here for ages but hope my story will be helpful to some of you. After 4 years at home with the DCs I was suddenly desperate to get back to work, just sick of the domestic drudgery and so on.Well,it's early days but I am in the third month of my new job and it's going well. It's local, well paid, part time and in a completely different area to what I used to do.I just thought I would post as I remember when I was job searching I would scour here for anyone who had managed to changed careers without doing lots of extra training and with decent pay after such a long break and often struggled to find anyone or many people seemed to have the attitude that a break would equal a poorly paid job with no prospects.I am not going to say what I do as its not relevant and I don't want to out myself but its not much more than administration and organising.Admittedly it helps that I live in London so the salary is alot more than I could expect else where but even so I am really pleased with myself.Best of luck to any of you who are job searching after a long break.Smile

I had a long break (15 years!) and was coming of a long term benefit, that for our family to have similar money coming in I needed to be earning more than the minimum wage, and was panicking because I had been out of the job market for so long.
I signed on with a temp agency, got a job temping as a receptionist, and becuase of can do attitude and enthusiasm etc got offered a ft role in a differrent office with that company. (career change into a role i would never have seen myself in and never considered - it was offered me, and i love it)
It can be done!!!

What happens to DC in the holidays? That's the bit that always stops me in my tracks. That and the fact that I would be 'working' AND still doing all the stuff at home.

DH and I try to take time off at different times, (we do go away all together though!) eg he is off during this half term, and i am not - but for the bh weekend we will all go somewhere (camping).
Holiday clubs for younger ones, older ones left at home, but with money to go swimming, pictures etc.
We ended up having to pay for 2 dc for 2 weeks of holiday club last year. This year none, as eldest is 18 now and has agreed to supervise youngest, as long as ££ for activity and £5 a day for her.
We are always at the end of the phone if disaster strikes!

As far as working and doing stuff at home - the home is messier. But I am SO much happier.

there are quite a few threads about holidays and DC - but combination of holiday clubs or some childminders take older ones in holidays, grandparent or other relatives and annual leave
doing stuff in the house - either DH does more - if there is one of course, cleaner could an option of course !
carryon - great story - any tips for finding that interesting, well paid part time job - or was it case of right time/right place
