Not really an issue - CV Advice

I'm going to update my CV with a view to having a look around and seeing what job's are out there.

Can anyone give me any advice on what makes a really good CV or is that just too general?

Any tips would be much appreciated.

totally depends what you are applying for.

but some general tips:

Make sure that covering letters and skills section of the cv are tailored to the specific job you are applying for.

Covering letter should emaphasize why this job is ideal for you, and you are ideal for this job.

Put most relevant stuff up front. Don't make them search for it.

No longer than 2 pages (unless lots of really relevant specific work info is required)

No quirky fonts

Thanks Sarky,

well initially I was just going to submit it to some agencies and see what happens. So I guess I need to tailor it to be very generic at this stage?

I have been in my recent job for 10 years and whilst it's obviously what I know I wouldn't be totally adverse to changing to something different. I have no idea how to get this accross.

If you have identified sectors then tailor a few cvs for each one. Different jobs require different skills and you can take these out of different parts of your experience. Also if you've been in the same company for 10 years see if you can find ways to show how your experience has developed e.g. promotions, more responsibility and split it up datewise.

If you really have no clue as to what you want to do then have a chat with a recruitment agent/careers advisor and see what ideas may appeal and then research the area more thoroughly before doing so.

Personally I'd be careful about just sending a cv to agencies as I have had bad experiences with some sending it out without my permission (in one case where I'd already applied by myself for the job).
