can anyone help me out - can't figure out whether I can afford to take this job or not...

namechanged regular - mainly because in order to explain myself I have to post actual numbers of my earnings etc
I'm struggling to work out whether it will break even or if I can't afford to do it.

Management post on offer, full time, 25 days leave plus 8 BH
initial salary 26k
25 miles from home + £3 day toll road

currently working part time, term time only
5 miles from home, earn slightly less than £10k but get almost the same amount in tax creds as I earn.

does this mean, as I suspect that the job offer will leave us worse off?

Hi Ancient

It's hard to say because I have no idea what you would still get in terms of tax credits (if any)

You need to take other things into consideration though don't you...

  • If you have kids, would you need to spend money on additional childcare.
  • Is the management post advancing your career?
  • Do you want to work full time?
  • Do you have a very reliable car or will you need to spend out on that as well.

thanks for answering, chipping :)
Afaik the tax creds would go down to nil
I would need three lots of after school club, plus possibly some breakfast club.

The post is going back to something that is my particular specialism and I have done pretty much an identical job in another company for 12 years+
Would do my self esteem good as currently I'm a bit frustrated, not using any of my knowledge. Not the ideal time to be taking a post like this family-wise, tho :(

Take it. (haven't done the sums, but...)

You need to factor in the fact that you earn 10k for 40/52 pa which would be a full time salary of £13,000. So new job is double the money but you'll have to find childcare for the holidays and possibly term time too, wear and tear and petrol for your car, amount of time driving 25 mikes each way - an hour's driving each way?

Term time jobs are like gold dust. Depends what age your dcs are but I wouldn't take the job.

ChippingIn · 20/05/2011 00:10

Right - so, with that little information I would say yes, you will be worse off financially. However, as usual, there's a lot to consider isn't there...

  • Can you afford to be a little worse off?

  • What about the school holidays? (practicalities & cost)

  • It will be a LOT more hassle (clubs/sick kids/inset days)

Is it worth it to YOU ? That is what it boils down to isn't it....

I'm honestly thinking I can't take it, as much as it would do my confidence good. Simply the wrong time. I have one child on the autism spectrum, who doesn't "do" childcare, which is why I downsized to the term time job and who is also why we get so much in tax credits.

Thanks mollie, chipping etc, confirmed my suspicion I think

Sleep on it - mull it over for as long as you can....

Sadly life isn't easy when you have a child with SN - well, it's not easy with any kids!! - but it's that bit harder when you have one with SN as well.

I guess you can't really take it and see how it goes because of leaving your other job :(

If you decide you really can't take it - what else can do you to improve your self confidence/self esteem?

VforViennetta · 20/05/2011 00:45

If I am honest I would grip onto the term time contract with my cold dead hands. I don't even work atm but the childcare during the holidays, must be a nightmare without taking into account special needs.

How about open university? Could you do something relevant with them? Or even something totally new, I am sure it would be free for you, it is for Dp and I. I have done a couple of modules, although not for awhile, it does give your self esteem a boost when you can get 95% on a module/praise from your tutor.

Dp hasn't studied since he left school but has been doing fine on a humanities course plus we both applied for the computer grant and got a laptop Blush

Then again if there is any way you could take the job, then try it. Have you tried putting all of your figures into entitledto, it's not very good with complicated circumstances though. Is there a good chance of progression with the new job?

Good luck anyway.

If you've got a child who doesn't do childcare it is a big leap to take the job you're considering. I would think long and hard about it if I were you. I've got the opposite problem - a Ds who prefers childcare to home! I recently went back to work after three months at home and doing the school run every day. Ds was aboslutely delighted as it means he gets to go to wraparound care. I didn't realise how much he'd missed it.
