I got made redundant today - Merry sodding Christmas

How shit is this?

Went through hell last year in my old job and came out with a settlement from them. Started new job on March 1st, put my heart and soul and most of my alleged leisure time into working on a major tender for them for the first 6 months.

We lost the tender because we were too expensive (not my fault or an area I had any input into). Saw my boss on Monday and had my objectives set for the next 6 months...no hint of job losses. Took Tuesday off for dd's birthday and got asked to be in the office today, which I did to be told I was being made redundant due to too many people in team and am now on 3 month's garden leave.

I feel sick and let down. The person who I replaced came back in May and has just had her temporary contract renewed and I get dismissed. It sucks and I am so angry.

On the plus side, I got an interview for a similar role on MOnday afternoon after 1 phone call.

I'm worried sick though. We have just taken an extra £10k on our mortgage and the redundancy insurance I took out doesn't cover being made unemployed within the 1st sixty days of taking out the policy.

Life sucks

tis the season for this...

i haven't read the whole thread but are you likely not to get another job within 3 months? 3 months is a long while and in between you get 3 months paid garden leave. is that not a good thing? (don't jump all over me).

I say this because I've just tried to take voluntary redundancy because the prospect of 3 months off with pay is very attractive.

What's the nature of what you do? Is the market place not very buoyant?

Thanks for your messages. Daddycool, I know I can get a job, but I am the main income earner in our family and it may take some time to get a job that will give me the minimum I need to pay the mortgage.

I have a consultation with my manager on Thursday when she will tell me whether there are any other positions I can apply for. Reality is that I would have to be desparate to stay working for them after this though. Spent today cleaning the house and windows instead of job hunting but after 2 hours surfing last night, I became very disillusioned.

Anyway, thanks for your good wishes and fingers crossed for Monday at 3pm!

Sorry to hear about the situation at work. Is there any chance that instead of garden leave they could end your contract and pay you in lieu of notice (PILON) instead? If they haven't got a contractual right to do that (i.e. if you haven't got what's called a PILON clause in your contract or their redundancy policy), Inland Revnenue usually allow the "termination payment" to be tax free up to £30k.

Any pay in lieu of a contractual right (e.g. pay in lieu of annual leave) would be taxed, but the lump sum pay in lieu of your 3 months notice wouldn't be, so would be worth much more than three month's salary to you.

smw, I asked them about paying me a payment in lieu and I said this should be tax free and they told me that they wont do this as there is a financial implication for them which I don't think is correct. Can you tell me where I can find more info?

Can't help much but hope you find something else. I am in a 'golden handcuffs' position which I hate and I half hope that something will happen.

To echo Sunchowder

When one door closes another will open.

Hope it does for you.

mummarie · 12/11/2005 21:25

i left my job yesterday and it feels GREAT!!!!!!!!

sis · 13/11/2005 11:47

galaxy, ask them what financial implication and maybe persuade them to phone up HMRC (formerly, Inland Revenue) and ask them for info.

The only thing I would point out is that it is supposed to be easier to get another job whilst you are employed.

I got made redundant several times in one year once - honestly not my fault - I was re-employed by the same company to do projects that got pulled by clients (makes me sound crap, but really, all to do with internal changes in the client companies). It was a bit stressful, but I got paid to do nothing and got another job very quickly, then decided to go freelance, which has worked out very well indeed. Good luck. You will be fine!

Thank you for your comments. sis, I understand what you're saying but I'm also of the mind that some companies may not want to wait 3 months.

I have this interview tomorrow at 3 and have been swotting up (quite ironic that they are part of the same group that we lost our biggest customer to)!

dd had our birthday party yesterday so that stopped me mithering and I had the best night's sleep I've had in the last 9 months last night.

I'm still not sure when the 3 month's notice takes effect from as I've had nothing in writing yet although I am going into see my manager for a consultation on Thursday.

Had my interview today and didn't get the feeling it went too well. Think I was trying too hard.

Agency have pissed me off as well. They spoke to me about two jobs that I felt I was perfect for and I chased them today and they've done nothing about submitting my CV.

I am sorry about that galaxy. I hope the agency pull their finger out - do you know who the jobs are with? can you apply directly?
