HELP! Have an offer of short term contract but major childcare issues/indecision

I went self-employed about six months ago and the work has been sporadic to say the least. So it's not that easy financially. I've been offered a three month contract which is very well-paid but it involves a long commute (ca. 3.5 hours/day) plus it's over the summer holidays. So I'd have to get a nanny to cover. It would take me right up until the time DS starts school.

I don't want to do it, I want to spend my last summer with DS before his grown up life starts, but I could really do with the money.

What would you do in my shoes?

I would say take the work, if the money you earn makes up for paying a nanny. You never know when you'll have periods of no work, so best to make the most of it.

The day rate is pretty good - not much less than what I charge and that's ad hoc rather than 3 months' solid work. I know it's the sensible thing to do :( I haven't actually got the job yet - just been rung about it but I need to think before I call them back.

Thanks tld :)

What TLD said.

I'm freelance with my pfb starting school this September. I'd take the work, thinking it will 'pay' for the half-term and future holidays when I'll be short of work.

It will be fine. You're just adjusting to a change in plan.

A change of plan - that's a really good way of looking at it, Rosebud. Thanks all - I know I'm being a silly sentimental moo. Plus I've only worked a few weeks in the last six months so DS has had plenty of time with me.

Better call them back then!

Would it not be cheaper to get a 'holiday let' near your temporary work and find a nursery nearby that could do your summer care for you?
What places are we talking about? - could you take your mum with you some of the time - or get your dh to take some time off.
Just to save you paying out for a nanny and all the hassle it may bring.
But never say no to work - you never know what it may lead to!
