Does an employer have to give you a certain amount of notice before you work a bank holiday?

My DH has been told he will have to work one of the 4 bank holidays over the next 2 weeks. He usually has all bank holidays off (public sector). No problem that he's working one of them (lucky to have the other 3 off), but he still doesn't know which one he's working. I'd like to plan some days out with the DC and maybe even go away for a few days over 1 of the weekends, especially as the weather is so gorgeous atm, but can't because his boss hasn't told him which one he's working yet. Angry He's asked every bloody day since finding out he was working one of them 3 weeks ago. His boss is now off until Thursday when he will (hopefully) find out which one he's working.

I was just wondering if there was a certain amount of notice they have to give before working a bank holiday (especially as he doesn't normally work them). Think it's pretty shitty of his boss as obviously we'd like to plan our weekends, (none of his colleagues know which one they're working either).

It depends entirely on what his contract/other policy says about it. No employer is required by law to give bank holidays off at all, or to give any particular amount of notice in terms of rotas/shifts.

What does his contract say about bank holidays in particular and about notification of shifts or rotas or whatever it is?

Flowery - if memory serves I think an employee is allowed to take Good Friday & Christmas Day as of right - unless things have changed.

If there is a change to the normal practice then 'reasonable' notice has to be given I believe. A quick call to ACAS might be helpful.
