Hello all, I am new here and with redunancy looming over me and expecting another baby in August I have been trying to look for things to do from home using the computer. I have looked at these ads for typing etc work that you can do on the computer from home. Does anyone know anymore about these or are many just scams? I have good IT skills and wandered how to put this into work. Any ideas from anyone would be appreciated.

Hi lupingirl, there do seem to be a lot of mumsnetters who want to do typing from home and are unable to find reputable companies. If you are prepared to work hard you could work for yourself for one of the long-established direct selling companies. I work for Usborne Books and absolutely love it - it is very flexible, the product is great and I love the very sociable side of the job. It definitely is a suitable job to be able to take children along with you eg to parent toddler groups or for you to be out in the evening at a party when dh/dp is home from work.

Happy to post with further information if it would be useful to you.

Hi

I run my own online typing service, www.typingsolutions.org.uk unfortunately no vacancies at present. I started this in June 2006 and now have a team of transcribers working for me.

I have written a book about starting up your own virtual assistant/typing service from home but, it can be used for any sort of home online business which can be found at www.typingonlinefromhome.com

The adverts re typing ads - scams, all of them and, by signing up you are perpetuating that scam as, you end up typing adverts that others then click on. There are typing services like mine who are taking on Transcribers. You would have to take a test and, then if you pass you will be taken on their books. However, a word of warning, some have thousands on their books and you are there for that "just in case moment". If you Google "Typing services" or Transcription companies", "Transcription Services" and then navigate to their vacancies page, if they have one.

No reputable company will charge you a fee for becoming one of their transcribers.

The rates of pay per audio minute vary at different transcription companies from 45p to 55p for normal dictation and 50p to 75p for interview transcription.

If you are taken on by an Agency, it would be on a self employed basis and, you would have to register with the Inland Revenue as such as, you are responsible then for your own national insurance and tax.

I really do believe that starting your own typing service/virtual assistant business from home is the way to go, particularly in the current economic climate. I have found that many firms are making their secretaries redundant and then outsourcing to companies like mine.

Hi, I am new to mumsnet and came across your message re typing. I am 7 months pregnant (first one!!) I usually do gardening and design which is quiet due to the pinch. Please would it be possible for you to forward on also any information to me? This would be much appreciated, as even when baby is born, I never make enough money over the winter season and so a typing job would be appreciated. Many thanks.
