Student loans

Sorry not sure where to put this but am so outraged that I wondered whether it was just me or if other people felt like this. I have recently stopped working after the birth of our third child. I am eligible for deferment on my student loan but as I am no longer employed/self employed my husband has to write a letter confirming that he supports me financially . He has to state that he gives me a certain amount of money each month. I find this incredibly demeaning 1. Am I not capable of telling them this, why is his word better than mine? 2. My husband and I are a partnership. The money he earns is ours not his. We only have one bank account and that is a joint account. He doesn't give me an allowance of a certain sum.
I don't want to have to send a letter but I also don't want to be paying my student loan. Any suggestions?

It is not clear who you have to inform, is it HMRC?
If so it is very intrusive - you are not claiming any benefit etc so why is it their business

You tell the who your loan is with which in my case is the Student Loans Company. I think that is the only one they've used over the past x years.
