I keep on seeing this referred to in job adverts but have no idea what it is/what it's used for. Can anyone give me any examples and is there anywhere I can learn about it online?

TIA

This is all brilliant, thank you. I was using a command line program, so maybe I'm not as far away as I think I am.

I know about SPSS! But have never used it Grin

SPSS?

Oh Dear.

'R' is the way forward

and it's free!

StealthPolarBear · 03/04/2011 21:07

ooh I will look into that thanks
Unfortunately SPSS is what's used at work

We use SQL at work. It's the database used behind all our dialler services. As far as I understand it, it's really flexible.

Ooh- where do you work? I want a new job, and I use SPSS...

goldenticket- Access uses SQL- did you not use it to build queries?

StealthPolarBear · 03/04/2011 21:33

You don't tend to write SQL for access though - you can but if you look away for a second it add 1000 unnecessary brackets and it's impossible to keep up.
I will PM you :) And then I will bug you with SPSS queries when I start working through this book.

Spss is simply dire for user friendliness but it seems like the only package that will do a lot of the statistical analysis for research. It is really flaky too, crashes for no reason, loses half your data (argh reliving my last job!). OP it sounds like you could do with a brief training course to bring you up to speed with the latest packages as I can't imagine someone will have the time to spend with you on a new job explaining how to use the software. AlsO it will give youmore confidence in applying for jobs.
