Have been thinking about retraining for a while, but I don't know what I want to do! I was going to apply for a PGCE in September but am rethinking this after reading the teaching threads Grin and completing a voluntary placement I have decided it's not for me after all. Can anyone offer me any Careers Advice Smile

Have you considered adult education/6th form college for teaching? I think these might not be quite the nightmare that secondary teaching can be. Would you like to use your psychology degree in some form? If so, then if it is BPS accredited you can go down any of the relevant routes, but I think they are very competitive. What about Ed Psych if you are interested in education? Otherwise you can do more or less anything.

Hi breatheskowly, yes I have thought about Edpsych, but I need at least a year's experience of working with children to get into the doctorate which is why I was thinking of going down the PGCE route first. I do want to use my degree but I just don't know in what capacity, sorry I know I'm being useless Grin

I quite like the idea of occupational psychology. I'm not sure what your background is, but it might be relevant. I haven't pursued it as I think the final jobs look like too much travel for me. I would be a bit wary of Ed psych at the moment as I imagine jobs are few and far between and the reorganisations of schools may unsettle the profession as it might not be clear who employs them once more schools are academies and don't have to buy into LEA services. I have been a psychology teacher and enjoyed it, but would only consider working with 6th formers or older again.

What do you do at the moment or most recently? What do you enjoy most about this and what do you dislike most?

hi again breatheslowly, thanks for the replies, how did you get into teaching psychology to FE and HE students - the courses I've looked into for teaching in the lifelong learning sector require access to 90 hours of teaching which I don't have, so they seem to be more geared towards people who are already in the industry?

To be honest I don't know. You could try looking at the gttr website - search.gttr.ac.uk/cgi-bin/hsrun.hse/General/gttr_search/gttr_search.hjx;start=gttr_search.HsForm.run
