Idiot question about 'pro rata'

LaTristesse · 19/03/2011 11:31

So if I take a job that's £50K pro rata and I work 2 days a week does this mean I get paid £50K for the year or £20K (the £50K divided by 5 days then multiplied by 2)?

These aren't the figures on offer to me btw, I'm just trying to simplify the maths for my idiot brain!

£20k

Cool, thanks, that's what I thought.

So... here'e the real scenario:

On my return to work contract they've put '£15K pro rated', now I'll be working 2 days a week and expect to get paid £15K for the year (£37500 divided by 5 x 2.), so should they have put £37,500 pro rated? I don't want to sign something which is wrong...

Thanks, again! x

I wouldnt be happy with that wording - its too vague IMO. Even if it said 15K (pro-rated from 37.5k), that would be clearer, but as it is it reads to me like you would be getting 6K/year.

Maelstrom · 19/03/2011 11:49

I would have thought that 15K pro rated is actually 6K

Driftwood999 · 19/03/2011 12:13

As you have the figure of £37500, then it suggests you are right in the 15K. What do you do, broadly speaking, without being specific, it would be something professional I should think. The wording should have been " ...£37500 pro rata.." (for full time but scaled, as in 2/5 days.)

Driftwood999 · 19/03/2011 12:16

When the job was advertised, did it state 37500K, pro rata for two days?

LaTristesse · 19/03/2011 13:17

No, it's my old job (which was £37500) and we've negotiated a part-time return to work... 2 days for £15K

I'll get them to reword it I think.
Thanks for your help everyone. x

Correct wording would be "£37500 pro rata at 2
days per week"
