Ideas for additional income in spare time??

Hi there

I'm shortly going back to work after the birth of my second DD, who is now nearly 10 months old. I'm going back 3 days a week. However, as DH keeps telling me, with the cost of living increases (anyone else noticed how the price of the weekly shop has rocketed!?!)and the fact that we are now paying for another 3 days of nursery for the little one, we are going to have to 'tighten our belts!'

Now, I don't mind this, but if there is a way that I can make a bit of pocket money in my spare time on an evening and weekend and at various other times during the week, I'd rather graft that sacrifice my annual holiday!

So, if anyone knows of any way that I can do a few hours here and there to top up my income, do let me know. I was wondering about casual typing from my home computer, answering calls from home on an evening that type of thing, but open to all ideas!

Thanks for your help!

Hi Crazy, I belong to Usborne. I do about 6 events per month max at busy times, much less at other times of the year. It pays for all sorts of "bits". My DH is the primary breadwinner so I don't have to pay the mortgage on Usborne but it really does help. I do the school run, all the other home bits and am now trying to work back up to a bit of a social life too!

If you love books it is definitely worth a go. Other people are passionate about skin care, jewellery - all sorts of small local businesses.

You didn't mention what your main skill was?

Hi Samels,

I'm a Communications Manager for a Housing Association, and am really just looking to top up my monthly income, as I only work part time, and unfortunately work are unable to offer me another day.

Can I ask:

What kind of time commitment does usborne require, what kind of work do you do and how much do you make on average?

Thanks!!

I do some freelance work in the evenings / non-working days, writing copy for local businesses, creating websites, etc.

Would that suit you?

ali23 · 16/03/2011 19:47

GrebdelsMum, I'm a journalist with two DC and will be going back to work soon. Given how vulnerable the newspaper world is atthe minute I'm too frightened to go out on a freelance basis, despite the fact this would really suit with now. I'm interested in the idea of writing copy for local businesses as this is something I've thought about recently.
How did you go about it? Are you coming from a copywriting or journalism background?
Thanks!

ali23 · 16/03/2011 19:54

Er, sorry about all the typos....writing while bf!
I'm a little more professional than that normally. Honest!

GrendelsMum · 16/03/2011 20:01

You've got mail, Ali123!

CrazyOVERbaby · 16/03/2011 20:02

Hi there GrendelsMum - yes! That would be exactly what I'm looking for - plus I do a lot of copy writing in my main job, so know the ropes. Can I ask how you get into that line of work and the kind of money you can expect?

Thanks v.much!

Interested in this too. I have been writing articles on a freelance basis, but would like to branch into copywriting if possible.

I do Phoenix Trading - selling cards, giftwrap and stationery. It's a direct selling thing like Usborne, Avon, etc. Joining fee has just been reduced to £30. This gives you everything you need to get going and I do it alongside another job.

tanmu82 · 17/03/2011 12:07

Hi Grendelsmum I'd be interested in that sort of thing too......can I have a pm too pretty please Grin
TIA

Fleurie69 · 17/03/2011 15:37

PMs sent!

tanmu82 · 18/03/2011 07:50

thanks Grendelsmum !

oldandknackered · 18/03/2011 08:43

Grendelsmum, please may I have a pm, too? Please, please, please...
I've got 25 years as a local newspaper journalist (mainly subbing) under my belt but was recently made redundant from a newspaper subbing hub :(
I don't miss the awful hub but I do miss the dosh. I'm now looking at ways to earn a few pennies without relying on newspapers, if that's possible.
Any suggestions and advice welcome. Many thanks.

GrendelsMum · 19/03/2011 11:22

Have sent more PMs!

Sorry to hear about people's difficult times lately.

BTW, don't forget, when you're selling your services to people, that you are not costing them money - the point of your services is that they will make money by having better written material instead of the pointless gobbledygook we all read so much of. It's much, much easier to sell if you genuinely believe that someone needs what you can do.

oldandknackered · 19/03/2011 13:20

Thanks for the PM, Grendelsmum. Smile

Holymoly321 · 20/03/2011 22:29

Grendelsmum, am an ex tv producer looking to do some part-time work too! Any chance you could do one more PM? Pretty please with a (wine) and a (biscuit) thrown in! (grin)

Holymoly321 · 20/03/2011 22:30

Ooh the shame! I meant a Wine and a Biscuit Blush I blame the iPad and the fact I haven't got my glasses on!
