Anyone work Monday, Wednesday, Friday? - tell me the positives. . .

I'm currently on maternity leave & my employers have agreed I can go back 3 days a week.
I requested Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday which they have said is not acceptable & they have offered me Monday, Wednesday, Friday. They will not allow me to have two consecutive days off as they say it doesn't work due to client contact.
I don't really like the sound of these days & feels as though I will be always having to handover work to colleagues as I'm off the next day.
Does anyone work these days & can you tell me how this works for you? I've never worked part time before so grateful for any advice.

Can anyone tell me what 3 day working pattern works for you & why?
I'm due back in few weeks, nursery place is reserved full time on the agreement I will confirm exact days when decided.

I worked Monday, Wednesday, Friday when I went back afyer DD. Definitely my preferred pattern. Good for client contoinuity as I was never away more than a day and available pretty much whenever necessary. Also good from my perspective as I was never away from DD for more than a day. She loved nursery but found it very tiring so I was keen to avoid 2 consecutive days.

Yes - I did M/W/F some years back.

It worked well. I hated the job and it meant only one day at a time. Tues and Thurs I went running and did the housework and forgot about the bastards.

Having 2 days free means being about for deliveries and DIY and decorating and doctors and dentists ......

It helps in the school hols as you only need to hassle people for one day childcare help at a time. It also meant I could help others on my days off, so we had a kind of childcare network going on.

Mind you ..... I hated that bloody job! Grin

Sorry for the typos. Bloody phone!

I think that there are loads of advantages to having a broken week rather than a block of three days - you never go too long without seeing your DC, you never have to spend too long with your DC (!), you never get too far behind on washing, cooking and other general domestic stuff.

This is an alternative option which gives you a bit more continuity at work and also means you're never off for more than one day which is Mon, Tues, Thurs OR Tues, Weds, Fri. The advantage of this is that you get a long weekend. I'm doing that pattern and find it works really well.

I do Tues, Wed, Fri as in a similar position where two consecutive days off wouldn't work for clients however I still wanted to have a 3 day weekend. Personally I like having two consecutive days in the office as the days when I am not in the next day are definitely more stressful.

For me Friday is a better day to work than Monday as there is a chance I will get out of there at a reasonable time as everyone tends to leave earlier on Fridays.

Monday is a much less stressful day off than Thursday as I am still in weekend mode and not thinking about work. On Thursdays I often end up doing a fair amount of work from home.

I do 3 days a week - Monday to Wednesday. For me, it is better to ahve 3 days in the office (I am a solicitor) in a row - better for continuity, easier to pick things up, I am seen as reliable as I am visible for days in a row.

I like getting my working week over with quickly, and I especially like having Fridays off as it means long weekends are easier and I end up with lots of holiday to take at the end of the year. Also, my employer takes the view that whatever bank holidays fall on your working days you can have off in addition to your annual leave, so I get more bank holidays as more fall on Mondays than any other day of the week!

I also like having "that Sunday night feeling of work in the morning" at the same time as my Mon to fri working husband ie on a Sunday night.

Mon, Wed, Fri to me would feel that I am never away from the place!

gruber · 16/03/2011 13:14

Mon/Wed/Fri is great- you never get too far behind with any housework, you get 2 days off mid week and lie-in so you're not getting up 3 days in a row! I loved it, am working 4 days at moment & really tired by Friday, whereas 3 separate days you can recharge in between.

Thanks for all your replies. I'm asking employer if they'll consider Tuesday, Thursday, friday as an alternative, but after reading your comments I'm slowly starting to think M/W/F might be good idea as like the fact of always having the next day off. got meeting with personnel manager next week to discuss so will hopefully have it sorted.
Thanks again, I really appreciate your comments & its helped me see those days in a more positive way. I'm not really keen on my job so working only one day at a time is now sounding like a good idea for me.

In my dh's work they have asked a couple of people to work M/W/F. The main reason they did it was because previously everyone working reduced hours / compressed hours had either a Monday or a Friday off, and it made it really difficult for full-time staff to arrange a long weekend.

nocakeformeplease · 21/03/2011 16:19

I am starting a new job and have chosen to do Tue, Wed, Thur as I def didn;t want to work Mondays and liked the idea of a long weekend.

However it does mean that I will hardly see DS for those three days so I may well change to M,W, F at a later date.

My friend does these days and loves it for all the reason stated above.

PoppyT · 05/04/2011 18:08

Well i'm going back & will be working M T W, my employers completely shocked me at the meeting & said after looking at the department they felt my original request would fit better.
Thanks for everyones replies & help. Hopefully getting my 3 days over with at start of week will be good & then I can enjoy my 4day weekend with my LO.
