Broken leg on maternity leave- any way I can extend my maternity leave?

I broke my leg in 2 places, + dislocated my ankle on the 27th December, and am only now beginning 2b able to look after my little boy again, but with alot of help from family. I had operation, and they said in all it will take 4-6 months to be able to walk unaided (+ therfore be able to carry + look after my baby on my own!). Just wondering is there anyway I can extend my maternity leave to cover this time I have in effect been sick. Due to go back to work in July, by which time I should have recovered.... just. I have read on internet you can opt to change to being on sick leave, but don't want to risk being fitter, sooner, and therefore would have to go back to work quicker ;-( Have already lost this precious time with my boy ;-(

thanks, it has bn totally crap, my H & family have been fantastic, but it's not how i wanted to spend my mat leave, had so many plans, + bn unable to do any of them. feel like i spend my whole time handing him over to everyone else. b4 accident was breastfeeding, had to give that up with the drugs i was on and operations i had. gutted ....

You could have gone on sick but that would have ended your maternity leave as your either sick or on maternity leave. You can't stop mat leave and start it again.

Go sick when your statutory maternity leave ends is the only option. Or ask for unpaid time off.

Will you have actually taken your full year maternity leave in July or is that just when you initially said you'd go back? Make sure you take a year and consider taking some parental leave tacked on to the end. On my phone so tricky to do a link but look up parental leave on the directgov website.

Thanks but cos my husband has had to cut back his hours, we are completely skint and can't afford to be off any longer. 9 months are up end of July ;-(

If you can't afford to be off any longer anyway then it's just one of those unfortunate things I'm afraid. Such a shame for you, though.
