Hi. Have recently started a job, (home based credit card receptionist for psychic reading company). Have done 4 night shifts and really unable to cope with any further night shifts. I have not signed a contract of any sort, nor was there any mention verbally of notice period. The job is ok and i was getting used to it, but the lack of support is pretty dire. If I hadn't emailed the reception manager I don't think I would have heard anything.

I spoke with the reception manager on the phone on Monday and explained that the night shifts are really not working out, its impacting on my health and affecting my children. She was very nice but said her problem was filling the vacancy. TBH as much as I sympathise, filling the vacancy isn't really my problem, and I did offer to work alternative shifts and be very flexible for a couple of weeks (which I felt was reasonable notice considering I haven't signed a contract). My next shift is looming tomorrow night and I'm getting myself into a state. I am owed money for 3 shifts which I am unsure whether they would honour if I don't work this week. I have never done anything like this before, always stuck at jobs, been mega reliable, conscientious to a fault, given more than required notice etc etc...but I just can't face it.

I wonder anyone could advise me?

Thanks in advance.

If you're an employee then under the Employment Rights Act they are required to give you a statement of particulars of employment in writing within 2 months. I think you only need to give minimum notice which might be 24 hours in this case. Check this site out and hopefully someone will come and answer more fully as my employment law knowledge is rusty. www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/RedundancyAndLeavingYourJob/Resigningorretiring/DG_175837
