Handing in notice - a wuss

I have just been offered a new job @ 25 hours per week subject to satisfactory references.

My current very small employer will take the hump when I hand in my notice and will be arsy about giving a reference. There is no HR dept and the only person to ask is my boss also MD. They have treated me pretty bad already cutting my hours down and like a lot of others I haven't had a pay review in 3 years service. The MD said he was hsppy at an appraisal last Nov although it is not foramlly recorded

My question is can he refuse to provide a refernce? and can he make me leave straight away without notice cos he has the hump?

I feel anxious already

We also dont get anything apart from the basic pay, if you work over time its your own problem....not even the xmas hamper! I guess its the same story with all these small companies. they treat their staff very badly. You are well rid! Can you get someone else who works there to do the reference?

My notice went down like a lead balloon. The director said he was disappointed after they had invested £ in my training & development.
My new job is subject to satisfactory references ,they may decide to be arsy and not give me one.
It was horrible - hated doing it and made me feel so guilty

Why am I such a wuss?

Am so sorry to hear that vicki. I was hoping it will be easy. I understand the feeling guilty part, I am handing over this wek and they have been moaning a lot about paying two wages and the effect it will have on our cashflow as HMRC doesnt give back SMP immediately. That made me feel guilty for getting pregnant even though I know they will get it back.
I guess it just proves that inspite of how horrid it is to work for them we are still loyal.
I hope they provide good references though, they cant write bad things just to be spiteful can they?

Finally handed my notice in on Friday - lead balloon springs to mind. I think they have got the hump and are going to be arsy with me for a whole month. They do however need me cos there is the payroll year end to do soon and no one else knows how to do it. I just hope they can gove me some sort of reference - it would be mean if they didn't

He didn't say sorry to hear you are leaving I got disappointing as we have paid for some training but they can't make me repay as I haven;t signed anything?

Gysela
We are both best off out of there, SMP is only about £120 pw and they can offset the refund each month against the PAYE liability can't they?
I guess you won't be returning after maternity leave?

I could always type a very general reference on letter headed paper and fax it to my new employer (unsigned). ?????

Don't be ridiculous Hmm. That will put off your potential new employers big time.

I know its a silly idea but Will my new employer think i ma at fault in some way if old employer wont cooperate? I got a good appraisal last november so it would purely be sour grapes

Stop getting ahead of yourself. Just wait and see what happens.

I will not be returning after maternity leave. I cant bear it tbh....
It maybe worth asking them for the reference before you do the year end payroll. Make sure they hand it to you and not send it in the post to your new employer. They are less likely to be arsey about it if they are handing it to you. Its a bit of arm twisting on your part because they need you to do the payroll but on the other hand its a win win situation. You give them what they need in return for whay you need......
