Am I right to worry?

I have just been offered job of my dreams and am now having all kinds of panics about it. Latest worry is that when they see my sickness record (17 days in last year) it could mean they will recant offer.

I have an existing medical condition - hence the sickness record. Other than that my references are glowing and I was first choice of candidate my a country mile apparently.

Should I worry?

Hmm - they really couldn't withdraw job offer - assume in made in writing - because of sickness or medical condition -it would be on the edge of disability discrimination -
have you disclosed the medical condition - I would at the same time as the record

It won't make any difference whether you worry or not, so I wouldn't bother. They've offered you the job, grab it with both hands and shout "YESSSSS!". Grin

Congratulations. :)

oldlady I wish I could have your attitude...I am a born worrier!

My dad always said there's no point worrying about something that's already happened, because you can't change it, and no point worrying about something that might happen, because it might not. Useful advice when my lads are out on the town/riding motorcycles/playing rugby. Grin

But I guess we're all made different.

I don't think they'll withdraw the offer, though, I think they want you, medical condition or no.

WIth the New Equality Act I don't think they could withdraw your offer so please don't worry!!!!!!

NorthernGobshite · 08/03/2011 21:10

Thankyou all. Have looked into it a bit on t'internet and don't think my employer can disclose my sickness record without my consent anyway. If and when new employer asks for it I will give them full explanation if medical condition, and as now am responding to treatment and condition better managed think should be ok. GP will also support me I think.

Just seen article about a woman who had 400 days in 3 years so my 17 days probably not worth the worry!!

oldlady your Dad is a wise man. My dad taught me to worry about every little sodding thing.

dh says I am just worrying because I am scared about new job. He probably has a point!

TO be honest it depends. Although I agree that they couldn't recant job offer if absence relates to Disability, they'd be within their rights to recant if its not. But agree there's no point in worrying. I'd think they are more likeluy to recant if you refuse to let your previous employer release this info.

They cannot ask you to disclose your sickness record prior to interview. Post-employment-offer you may request this info - but advice is to look carefully at why asking for this info and what you would do with it once obtained which takes you into a pretty grey area.

Thankyou, all very helpful.

I have srthritis which causes me a lot of pain and can be quite debilitating hence my sickness record. I will tell them this if and when neccessary.

arthritis! sorry

Arthritis is a disability, your new employers would need to look at how they might need to make adjustments to enable you to do the role.

I can not think that this would hold you back - I do not know the role you are going for but I really would struggle to think how they could not make adjustments if required, and they would recognise that their may be flare ups of arthritis.

Anyhow if your references are glowing then that is a real positive. Given the current state of the economy then it is a real achievement to get an offer so congratulations and I hope it works out well for you.
