Am I the only one who has such difficulty handing in their notice?

I want to do it, I really do. I am going to become a contractor and spend more time with DS.

But I get upset and cry every time I do it because I don't want to let anyone down, which is all very embarrassing and very undermining.

I was going to do it this morning, but then my boss came in and told me how much work was coming in. Then I went for a walk at lunchtime to clear my head, ready to do it in the afternon. When I came back he had gone out for the rest of the day.

I am out of the office tomorrow. Earliest I can now do it is Thursday.

If you're having trouble handing in your notice are you sure contracting is something you would take to. I'm a contractor and its a very impersonal world. Please and thank you are something you don't hear and you really need thick skin as clients can and do drop you with a days notice or tell you a role exists then tell you it isn't available 3 days before starting Angry

Oh no Grevling, don't tell me that!

TBH it's more about spending time with DS and doing some freelance work on the side to bring in a bit of cash. I'm hoping my current employer will sub to me.

Hi, I can sympathise with you! Every time I have had to give in my notice from previous jobs, I have been sooo nervous and had to really force myself to do it!

I have gotten myself into some terrible states. Saking, not sleeping etc etc.. I have worked in very busy roles and thought that the timing was bad for me to leave but it has always been taken well and I have always been wished well.

Try to think of yourself and your family and don't feel guilty - you have the right to move on :)

shaking - not saking!

Grevling · 23/02/2011 12:02

Have you handed it in yet?

Didn't want to give a bad view of contracting just remember the key to it all "Smile and Invoice".

MarionCole · 23/02/2011 19:50

Thanks Lisa, that's exactly how I feel, nice to know I'm not alone. Timing seems so bad for them, it's good for me though.

Not done it yet as I was out of the office today. Possibly tomorrow. The timing just never seems quite right.

The first two times I handed in my notice, I was sent home to think about it over the weekend, which is a nightmare because then you just have to go through it all again on Monday!!

Problem is, because I don't have another job lined up that needs a starting date, I have nothing to make me do it.

I've done it! Cried the whole way through Angry but boss was very understanding and is still smiling.

Other boss has just come in though and offered me flexitime working from home.

Bugger.

HI, just read your post, well done for going ahead and doing it.

Quick question, why are you not pleased with regards their offer? It seems to me that you are obviously in a good position to negotiate the hours that you would like. So do you want to leave primarily to spend more time with your DS or is there something else pushing/pulling you?

MarionCole · 24/02/2011 19:36

The backstory is that I have issues with the place and I feel I have few prospects there. It's very nepotistic and I don't have any respect for the people I work for. I really want to start my own business doing the same thing, then I will get out of it what I put into it - if I work hard at it then I could build a good business. In the short term though, I will need to do some sub-contracting to keep the work coming in and I am hoping that my current employer will pass some work my way. At the moment, I have given my notice and asked if they will consider sub-contracting to me. They have offered the flexitime option, but this doesn't give me the freedom to get work from other places.
