Hi, I work night shifts in a home for young people with learning difficulties. I'm on my own there at night. There is only one other night worker but there are people on the bank who could be asked to cover and of corse agency.

The other night I worked, I started to feel sick, this got worse as the night went on and at about 7:30am I was actually sick. I knew the morning staff would be in soon, so didn't phone the on call person.

When the team leader came in, I told him I'd been sick and feel awful and that I didn't feel well enough to come in again that night. He said to see how I go and phone if I'm sick again. I was sick on the way home, my Dh had to pull over, so I phoned work and told him. He said "So what do you want to do?" and I said well can you please try to cover my shift and if you can't, phone me to see if I'm any better.

At about 5pm, my boss phoned to say "You said you'd phone back but didn't!" I said that I'd told the team leader and she said that it must have been mis understood.

She said that the other night worker would cover my shift, but in return she wants me to do one of hers next week. Shock

I do 3 nights a week, which is hard enough as I have a DD with special needs who is home educated and needs a lot of care. I really can't do 4 nights in a week, and don't think it's fair that I should have to.

I told the boss in the nicest possible way that I wasn't happy with this and she just said "well, I'll leave it to you to sort out with the other night girl. Angry

I haven't had a day off sick in the 12 months I've worked there! This other one is sick quite a lot and because I can rarely cover, they get bank or agency. They don't make her do extra shifts!

I don't even mind if they don't pay me, there is just no way I can do 4 nights in a week.

I do like my job, it's the best one I've had. I'm very fond of the residents and the money is good so I really don't want to make things difficult for myself. At the same time though I don't want to be treated unfairly.

why are tehy asking you to make up for it? it was a sick day not AL.

BooyFuckingHoo · 17/02/2011 20:37

you are entitled to eb paid for sick days as far as i know.

The other worker apparently said that she was willing to come in at short notice Confused only if I can do one of hers as she dosn't want to do 5 in a week.

They knew I'd been sick at 8am, the night shift starts at 10pm, so that's not really short notice.

I wish she'd just said no, I can't do it.

just tell them you can't do it and will take it as a sick day.

mummyloveslucy · 17/02/2011 20:50

I will have too. It's not as if I'm always sick or was lying to them. It's not even legal to have me working if I'm being sick.

mummyloveslucy · 17/02/2011 20:53

I think we do after a year, I'll have to check.
