do they think I am not up to it?
I'd appreciate the opinions of people in the know. My backround is that my DH and I ran our own comapny for 13 years. When recession struck it hit us hard and turnover dropped 80%. I took a job which although I felt I was overqualified for, in terms of experience, I was very happy to be offered as we were struggling so much financially. DH has managed to keep our business afloat - just- and also manages the kids & home etc while I work full time.
I feel I am very naive in a corporate environment as I worked for myself for so long. My colleague is retiring at the end of this year and I had hoped to be offered her job. For the last 18 months or so it has been talked of as a given - it is much more in line with my experience etc. However, during my review last week my manager has said that she is giving me until June to prove I am capable of this job (business getting role)and that she has reservations about my experience which kindoff duplicates hers but is lacking in the area they require. The lady who is retiring was experienced in a different field. I an happy to get out there and burn up my contacts bringing in business but I am almost afraid to do that in case she is serious about hiring someone else.
What I'd love to know is - is it a common ploy to ask someone to prove themselves in a position and then come back and say 'sorry, you didn't step up to the plate' we won't promote you. Or does it show serious intent. Sorry this is long - I will try to elaborate in subsequent posts if needs be.

What have you got to lose? Confused

I've basically said that if I don't get the promotion I am not happy to stay in my current position indefinitely.

Like I said - what I'd love to know from people with management experience - is it a common precursor to promotion to be told that we are not sure you are right for this role and you have x months to bring in some business or is it a tip-off that they have no intention of promoting me?

To me, it sounds like a warning that they won't promote me but I find my boss difficult to read and it's possible she is trying to motivate me/ hold me to ransom over promotion while she has the power to do so. Just looking for opinions from people who regularly promote/ demote staff.
