How far do you travel for work?

Dh is having a change of career and so far the two interviews he has been offered have queried how far he would travel. He's looking at 2-3 full days and travelling up to an hour so not a huge amount of travelling but it seems yo be thought of as strange! We are rural so limited opportunities close to home especially since he is looking a niche areas.

It's not unusual to travel an hour is it?

I travel about 1hr 15. Its nearly 60 miles each way, and it is killing me with having 2 young children, one of whom wakes regularly at night still.

CrispyTheCrisp · 02/02/2011 17:13

We are semi rural and I used to travel 45 mins/1 hr depending on traffic to a big city (not London). I ended up doing 8-5, rather than 9-5 to miss the morning rush hour as it could have extended travel by 1/2hr

DH usually travels about 45 mins each way (or works from home), but can commute 3-4hrs as he is doing tonight

I now (mainly) work from home, so a 10 second commute from the kitchen

nymphadora · 02/02/2011 17:17

So not weird then! He is only looking 30 miles without mway or 45 with. Technically we are semi rural but to get to anywhere you go through rural if that makes sense Confused

Do most people in these companies live very locally? Up to an hour sounds perfectly normal to me and to most people used to a commute, but if the average commute in the companies in question is 10 minutes, that's different.

I used to travel about an hour and 20 minutes into London when I commuted and I thought that was perfectly normal. But locally to where I live I've heard people moaning about their 'horrendous' commute of 30 minutes. Hmm

My commute is now 10 seconds upstairs to the study. Grin

bunjies · 02/02/2011 19:43

I commute from NE London to SE London and it takes me 1h15mins minimum. It can up to 2hrs depending on the tube/buses Angry. I would love a 30-45 min commute Envy.

Hulababy · 02/02/2011 19:44

I now travel about 10 minutes by car to work.

However until two years ago I was travelling between 1 and 1.5 hours each way for work, even longer if leaving later on a Friday evening.

nymphadora · 02/02/2011 20:37

I think it's because it's a low wage job so people don't travel as far? Also he is having to explain why the drastic career change & is feeling a bit more questioned than a usual interview IYSWIM.

Given the cost of commuting (by car or train) i think i would question travelling 800-1000 miles a month for a low wage job. This could cost a few hundred a month on petrol plus additional servicing for wear and tear/tyres etc

KangarooCaught · 02/02/2011 23:06

Semi-rural, 54 mile round trip to/from work to a larger town, about 50mins one way with a good clear run, dh travels a bit less far, but takes as long, if not longer. Am seriously giving thought to moving closer to my work (nicer area than dh's place of work) and whacking the extra petrol money on the increase in mortgage a move would entail, the journey for dh would only be marginally longer in distance.

KangarooCaught · 02/02/2011 23:08

Dh used to do a commute into London by car of an hour and a half each way, minimum, and it was a killer on top of the very stressful job he had. 1st post though, and once he got his foot on the ladder he had more choice about where he then worked.

nymphadora · 03/02/2011 08:52

It's better than no job though isn't it. We use my car for commuting & it costs v little to run. 50mpg, Tyres seem to last forever!

I drive ten miles to work - which can take me up to an hour in rush hour because of horrendous traffic jams.

hairyfairylights · 03/02/2011 10:34

I travel six miles, with some travel but not much duringt the working week. Takes about twenty mins.

CrispyTheCrisp · 03/02/2011 11:56

Yes, definitely Nymph, but maybe the prospective employer thinks that DH will be retaining a smaller proportion of his take home pay because of the commuting costs and just wants to check he is ok with that? Some people might not consider this (Hmm i know), and then pack it in as it is 'too much'. The employer is then back at square one - they may have experienced this before too.

Good luck to DH and his career change BTW, sounds like he is working hard to make it work Smile

110 mile round trip taking 4 hours in total. I've done the journey for 8 years now and have had enough. I arrive frazzled and return home in the evening stressed by my journey - it consists of major motorways. I could manage before I had my children but am now struggling.
