SMP upfront payment

My work is a very small employer (4 employees) and only pays the statutory minimum maternity pay. However on past occasions when two of my colleagues had their babies they were given a large upfront payment on top of the statutory pay when they went on maternity leave with a letter stating that this was in reflection of the fact the company as a small employer could not afford any more than the statutory minimum maternity pay but wanted to make this payment as a supportive gesture.

I was assuming that i would get the same however I have have now received my first month of maternity pay and did not get any extra. Do you think I should raise this with my employer? I don't want to damage my relationship with him and I do know that the company is not currently doing as well as it has in the past which is probably a factor. If I do raise this what is the best way to do it?

I feel a bit disgruntled as I would have liked him to at least warn me that on this occasion it would not be possible to pay any extra. Also my employer is still emailing me questions about work which take some time to answer as he was not sufficiently organised to arrange any sort of handover and I now feel reluctant to spend my time answering them. Am I being unreasonable here?

Are you sure that it was a payment on top of their maternity pay?

I do know that it is possible for small employers to pay maternity pay as a lump sum rather than monthly.

It may be a discretionary gesture. Is it written anywhere in contracts or policies?

Perhaps the recession is making it impossible
for them to do now. (I think it's a very generous thing for them to have done)

Ps they can't force you to do any KIT time ... I'd email politely saying you are unable to do it
at this point but would be happy to discuss some KIT days later on when things have settled.

Yes it was a discretionary gesture and is not written anyway. My contract does not state anything about maternity pay.

I am pretty sure that it has been pulled due to the economic situation however I would have liked my employer to have notified me of this.

My employer is asking me questions that take 30 minutes a couple of times a week rather than specifically asking me to work KIT days. There is no mention of any payment for this time. Should I tell him not to contact me about these issues - I would really like to switch off from work at the moment but do not want to damage my relationship as I would like to return to work.

If it was discretionary, To be fair, it could not have been expected, and there was nothing to notify you of.

I would politely state that at present you are unable
to do any work during your maternity leave but would be happy to discuss KIT time later on when things have settled
