At start of year we got a memo to inform us of 29 days holiday due to Royal wedding. Today a new memo has come round saying it is not a legal obligation to give us this day and it has been withdrawn. Not that bothered but can they do this? They are really awful to work for, the directors think you should be grateful to have a job and should bow to their every whim. Needless to say trying to get summat else...

What does your contract say about holidays? If it says x days plus bank holidays then they have to give it to you.

if it says either x days plus 8 bank holidays, they don't.

If it says x days including bank holidays they don't.

I work 0.6 Fte and in my contract it says 12 days (20 pro-rata) plus BHols. Are Bh Pro-rata as well so I get 0.6 x 8?
There is no consistency with contracts so other Ees could say different

That's a rubbish contract as I'm sure you know!

BH should be pro rata, yes, but if it just says 'bank holidays' without specifying how many that would mean that for full time staff anyway, the extra bank holiday this year should be given.

Will the extra one fall on one of your working days?

Sort of - I work until lunchtime on Fridays so I do half a day

Seriously if you challenge anything even in a nice way you face the wrath of the directors - it is just not worth the aggrovation. Just wondered what the law said
This is the latest memo

Reference the above memo:
Having taken advice, this is not an official bank holiday, it is a public holiday and therefore if any members of staff wish to take this day off it will unpaid.

Well the memo is codswallop. It's just as 'offical' a bank holiday as the others - it's laid down by the government. So if their contracts just say 'bank holidays' rather than a number, they ought to grant it.

Official bank holidays

Thanks for the help, the directors are so stingy - like Scrooge
