I have a quick question. Its my understand that your employer needs to pay the minimum of 90% wage for 6 weeks. Do most people assume this is all you are going to get until told otherwise and what if you are the first female in the company.. and no where in the handbook they even talk about maternity leave?

Colleen I have assumed you are in the UK. This link gives your statutory rights.

I hope this helps

Have a good look through this as well - scroll down to the section on reductions in pay.

The minimum is 90% for 6 weeks then the basic rate of SMP for a further 33 weeks, as long as you meet the qualifying requirements. You can certainly ask whether your employer is prepared to pay any extra but they don't have to.

I can't see anything about maternity pay in WhatsWrongWithYou's link.

Sorry I mis-understood; didn't register the op's ref to maternity leave until later Blush.

Thanks. I knew the minimum law on mat. Pay. My question was more about employers and if they always go by the law only and just expect that or do more companies have better policies.

It varies hugely. Lots of companies only give statutory, lots give some kind of enhanced arrangement. If your company isn't big enough to have a maternity policy yet they are more likely to just do what they have to I imagine. Are you pregnant and have you asked them?

TTC but recently wished jobs and now deciding if we will put plans on hold. My DH would ideally be our stay at home parent but worried and think we should hold off if 6-9 weeks is the m time before I head back.. Just feel like it will be so hard. Only woman at my new company so no maternity leave info in the handbook.

if there isn't any info I would assume it's just statutory pay

ColleenEatsVeg · 22/01/2011 14:29

Thanks so much for your help. Will focus on trying to make my DH pregnant, that would be easier :)

Some sectors and companies have an enhanced maternity leave package, however, if nothing stated, I'd assume statutory.
