Does anyone know how much money the benefits agency take from your benefits if you refuse to attend a meeting/course?. I get lone parents income support.

WHy would you refuse to attend? I recieve income support as a lone parent and see a lone parent advisor every 6 months. I find it useful. She offered me a course last time I was there but tbh I didn't really think it was for me. I'm due to go see her again next month I think, and I will probably take up her offer as I still don't have a bloody job.

I have to see an advisor every 2 weeks and i wont attend because the course is 1 hour away on the bus and starts at 9.30. I have to take my daughter to school at 9 but HAVE to be there for 9.30 or im sanctioned(and no i am not leaving her for half an hour in the playground and no my school doesnt have a breakfast club and no i dont have anyone else to take her).

Have you explained this to them? I was at the benefits office last week and they were threatening to stop some poor old guys payments because he hadn't filled in his job seekers booklet.

BooBooGlass · 10/01/2011 17:18

How old is your child? Are you about to switch to jobseekers? I don't understand why you have to be seen every 2 weeks

I'm confused about the 2 weekly meetings too (also on IS). I get dragged in every 6 months (must be about due another one actually) to go a back to work/better off calculation meeting and that's it.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 10/01/2011 18:09

anyhow - you won't be sanctioned if you ring them up and tell them you can't make that time - they'll just give you another appointment.

jodie1131 · 10/01/2011 20:22

I am getting moved to JSA in april. My daughter is 8 years old and the job centre arent sympathetic. They arent giving me any leeway. I am just thinking about going in late and if they push the point i will have to take the financial sanction.

Are you on IS now?I knew they'd lowered the age of DC, that you could claim IS with- it used to be under 12,have the government reduced it to 8 already?..

Did you explain the situation to the general Job Centre Plus telephone no. who make the appts.-they tend to be pretty snotty in my experience, or your Lone Parent advisor herself?

jodie1131 · 11/01/2011 19:41

Im on IS now and they change the age to 5

that hasn't come in yet Confused

it's scheduled to start in October this year

Jellykat · 11/01/2011 22:16

OMG.. lots of 5 year olds waiting at the school gates, while mum sits in traffic jams returning from work.

Hmm around here there are no 'afterschool' clubs, and if there were, a 5 year old would be totally knackered. Can't imagine there are many jobs that finish at 2.45 either Confused

I have to say it's a hideous situation, if you've got no help from family or friends you're stuffed.I am truly grateful my DS2 isn't that little anymore..Because the practicalities don't seem to have been thought out!

Kosmik · 13/01/2011 14:56

That's disgraceful. I think you should see your MP for advice if the jobcentre won't budge on the meeting time.

Its the reality of Camerons Britian
