breastfeeding and working late

Any advice or experiences welcome

I'm a PA at a busy city firm and I'm returning to work soon, my baby will be 6 months and ebf, I work in a team where working late is seen as good, sometimes its warranted, others its just for show

Basically, I will continue to feed my baby, but with the commute would need / like to leave on time, this has always been my motto anyway, lifestyle too short, and i work damned hard in the day anyway

Can work make me stay late? Do I have any rights, do any of you have experience of this kind of situation?

I think you need to

  1. check your contract (does it say anything about a requirement for flexible working, and does it say anything about your standard working hours. Our contracts are for 37 hours per week, to suit the needs of the organisation, and they state that the core hours are between 8.30 and 5.30, and that flexibility is required for evening and weekend working. For our reception/clerical/admin staff it is clear that betwen them ( 3 people) phones must be manned Mon - Fri, 9.00 - 5.00.
  1. decide on that basis whether you need to discuss it with your manager or not in advance.

Hopefully someone will be able to advise in terms of whether there are specific rules about bf mothers returning to work.

Yes it does.

Core hours are worked between the hours of 8.30 and 5.30! So I start at nine and finish at five with a half hour break four days a week and do a further seven hours.

it means that unless there is a business reason (like a Saturday event, or an evening meeting) then we don't expect people just to 'work late' for the sake of it (or to rack up additional hours for time off in lieu).

oh i see!! That;s theopposite of my 'core hours' which are the hours that MUST be worked unless you have leave approved.

Our industry needs for people to be available evenings (quite a lot) and weekends (less so).

But as your job is administrative (PA) my thinking is 1. work should be able to be done during 'usual' working hours and 2. there should be very little need for you to be around late (unless you are required to minute evening meetings?)

No its cultural at my place, everyone, including admin are expected to not leave on time, banking is like that, sometimes there us a real need but mainly its a brown misinformation exercise

If your baby is at nursery, then you will have to leave at a specific time to collect them anyway, there won't be any flexibility. I assume from your question that this won't be the case, but I'm pretty sure it's covered in sex discrimination laws etc.

There will always be someone to collect from nursery, its more the pressure to stay late, being leaned on to do overtime as such
