Does anyone know about training as a sonographer?

I am very very interested, but have no idea where to start. Advice very gratefully received.

Thanks. (have to get off pc in a mo but will be back tomorrow)

You will have to train as a radiographer first and then do a post grad course after you have been qualified for a while.
I believe some midwives also train as sonographers to scan pregnant women.

Thanks Bearcat.

I have a BSc and had a place at the Institute of Psychiatry to do a Masters in Neuroscience, but couldn't take it up because I was in the throes of a major ms attack. As the IoP is in London and I am now in Devon, I can't ask for them to take me now (they wouldn't anyway as I deferred my place in 1999!).

I was wondering if there was an alternative route than via radiography, though.

Maybe you could contact Exeter University.
I believe they have radiography undergraduates, so would be able to give you the most up to date information.

You have to be a radiographer first, and then you do general ultrasound

NHS careers website info on radiology.

Thanks a lot.

Exeter do have a course in radiography, so that would be easy.

I was half hoping to miss doing another 3 or 4 years undergrad but hey. (I was also hoping to skip radiography and jump straight into sonography - mum was a radiographer and I feel a bit weird following her footsteps so closely).

I was also thinking I could maybe do physiology etc with the OU rather than at a Uni as part of a wider course, but you can't pick and choose like that.

I'll bite the bullet and get on to Exeter in Jan.
