Is it worth me doing Prince 2?

I recently started a thread and got some very helpful advice about moving into project management. I have been trying and so far not succeeding in getting a job as a project co ordinator/administrator. I am thinking of signing up to the Prince 2 training. Its about £800. Is it worth my while?

Good luck - hope you enjoy it.

You will want to make sure that your cv is absoloutely clear about your skills - right at the start (employers do not want to have to make any assumptions, or read the detail of the cv when they are doing the first cut).

So an explicit personal statement right at the beginning that states: x years experience in [industry], extensive experience in project management etc...

Then have a serious look at your job titles.

If you job title was for example, Research Officer, then your longer description of the responsibilities including managing a project, a potential employer may miss that on a first read through. You do have to be scrupulously honest about the activities of your role and the skills you have, but you could put your job under the heading of Project Management - scientific officer.

Difficult to explain in abstract - if you pm me your cv I could have a look, if that would help.

In my experience, you don't need PRINCE to practice as a project manager in most parts of the public sector but it gives them reasurance if you are qualified and may give you an advantage over other candidates.

I heard that Firebrand Training do excellent Project Management courses and give all the advice and career guidelines you need. By the way, what is your current level of Prince2 experience? When I did my PMP training, I paid a lot of money but it was well worth it at the end, so sometimes, it's not about the money what exactly you want in your career. Here are some resources that might help you:-

Has anyone got a view on the APM Introductory Certificate?

I'd like to get into Project Administration after a long break from employment. I'm currently doing the ECDL level 2 to show an ability to use Microsoft products like Excel and Access. With a view to picking up some temping jobs and getting some current office work experience. In the slightly longer term I'd like to get into a position to get those admin assignments in a project environment. My background is in IT, within the Telecoms industry. As you can imagine most work was in the context of a project!

Does anyone think it's worth me doing the Introductory certificate? To show I am interested and have an appreciation. At least it'd be on my CV as working towards! And refresh my knowledge. Been looking at Prince 2 Foundation but have a feeling that something broader would be better for me, rather than intro to a specific methodology. Of course Microsoft Project Course wold be good to show specific admin skill.

Years and years back I did do a Microsoft project course and a 5 day company specific project management course. They didn't use Prince but their own internal methodology.

I completely agree with you. It is a chicken & egg scenario. In fact most of people going onto a PRINCE2 course is probably facing the same situation as you do. I am in the same shoes too. I did my course by elearning through knowledge train: www.knowledgetrain.co.uk, their elearning course is very good, check it out if you like, and let me know if you have any questions. www.prince2-online.co.uk
