Ex-Secondary Teacher working in a Preschool

I'd like some advice, really. I left my teaching job (MFL) when I went on Maternity leave with my ds1 (7 years ago). I have recently got a job in a local preschool (where I've done a lot of voluntary work in the past) - just bank work for the moment, but with the possibility of more hours from September when my youngest starts at school full time.

I would like to be properly qualified to teach in this kind of setting, perhaps with a mind to moving into Primary school within the next 5 years or so. So what I'd like to know, is what kind of qualifications do I need? I have a BA (Hons) in German, a PGCE (Secondary school), but I think I'll probably need to do some sort of conversion course.

Thanks for any help!!

No, you don't have to do a conversion course. If you have QTS you are qualified to teach any phase. Obviously getting a job in a particular phase is down to having demonstrable knowledge of the relevant curriculm and pedagogy- which you are getting.

I have a PGCE in Secondary Science, did my NQT year and a subsequent year in Y4, taught PSHCE peripatetically from R-Y6 for two years and have since moved into specialist teaching with KS1/2 children with severe and complex emotional and behavioural difficulties (which is by far the best job of the lot!)

Just go with your interests- it's the secret to enjoying teaching!

BTW I think if you want or feel you need to do a course you would qualify to do a 'Return to Teaching' course as you have been out with your DCs. But you definitely don't have to. Smile

Thanks EBDteacher- I think the Preschool would feel better if I did something, and I'm in contact with the local college where there staff get their qualifications - I think/ hope the course leader will have a word with them!! Other than that, I think it's just a case of getting some experience!

You could do EYPS, early years professional status, but you don't have to

Agree you could do EYPS but as you have QTS you're qualified.

The other option would be to do something like the level 3 diploma taking the early years pathway but that won't help you get a job in primary.
