Hi,
Does anyone know the average wage for a personal assistant in London?

thank you.

Varies hugely between sectors, eg. charity will generally be less well-paid than banking/finance in the City. You will have to be a bit more specific.

Agree with annh, but I reckon the range is probably between £17,000 to £35,000 (top end woud be legal secretary type person). If you have several years' experience but are not extra-qualified I think you could probably get around £25,000 (depending on sector).

Thanks for replying.
This post would be with as a personal PA to run the home of a very wealthy family.

Don't know but those family jobs are often full on, expecting 24 hour service, so if it were me, I'd be asking for the top end of that salary scale.

jaabaar · 03/12/2010 11:52

They would probably pay 3000 gross a month for 3 days. That seems very generous then?

3 days a week that is. Plus on call the rest of the days.

I would be wary of the on call bit. Otherwise seems good salary. I worked for a man as a (business) PA who also had a household PA and she worked all the time, forever taking calls on holidays etc.

Jaabaar, is that £36,000 pa pro-rata or for three days? If the latter, it sounds very generous which leads me to think that it will be incredibly demanding with constant calls, emails etc on your days off. If it is pro-rata, I would really try to get some clarification of what "on-call" really means. I had an acquaintance who did a similar role for a few years and who eventually changed jobs because she felt very isolated with no work colleagues, the family had other staff such as a housekeeper and nanny but they all had their own roles and didn't really speak to, or even see, the PA. She also found it really wearing to spend most of her time on what, to her, were trivial tasks like returning a faulty iPod to a store, trying to track down hard-to-find books or toys, being hassled about rsvp's for a party (like why a certain well-known Lord was not attending the family's party and what she was going to do to get him there?! Having said that, I know someone else who works two days a week as a PA managing an estate for a wealthy individual. She manages tradespeople, payroll, getting quotes etc as well as all the more personal stuff and loves her role.

Thank you for your replies!

the £36,000 is for the three days (gross). The lady I would work for is an elderly lady. The most important thing to her is trustworthiness. Job includes payroll, payment of personal housebills, birthday cards flowers, and whatever comes up. I will definately clarify the on call part of the job.

I was also thinking of the part of being alone all day. however in my previous job I was so overworked that from 9 to 6 I did not have one break, and hardly had 3 1/2 minutes to chat to anyone. Very stressfull.

Maybe that is why I think this job would be better suited for me. Uffff, decisions.... difficult to give up a 8 year job even though it was not good....

That is an awful lot of money for a private PA working 3 days a week. PAs can earn up to £70k in London but that would be a very high profile position working for someone very senior and would be 100% full on.

Have you been a PA before? It's not a choice for the faint hearted. It's normally bloody hard work! The private PA thing might be slight different though. Only way you'll know is to give it a go. I'd love to work 3 days a week for £36k to be honest. I earn less than that working for a Chief Exec.
