Is she mad or am I mad?

My female boss has told me today that at 38 it is now or never for me career wise
My ds starts school in January. Dd is 8 and I have worked for 10 years in same job doing a job share. I love working part time because it has allowed me to spend 3 days a week with kids and to have enough money to not scrimp too much. She assumes that I am now burning to go back to work full time.. told me it was time for ME. My ME time is the days I don't work cos I love it so much. Is she mad or am I mad?

She hasn't got kids has she?

Whizzz · 22/09/2005 22:18

she's mad of course

That's the wierd thing- YES. She has a daughter aged 20 and tragically her son was killed in a motorbike accident aged 19 4 years ago. she worked full time when they were young and had mother's help type person who was an angel. I find her doubly difficult to work out bearing in mind the loss.

it's projection
she wants you to validate her choices by replicating them herself.
ignore her. if you can

SenoraPostrophe · 22/09/2005 23:14

yes, definately.

poor woman.

I might be immature but still not sure if at 38 I am ready for a career!!!! Perhaps I am lazy? She really can't see part time working as beneficial - thinks it's a cop out

What's wrong with being lazy? Are you harming anyone?

That 49 Up programme tonight struck me - one of the blokes said "I wish I hadn't spent so much time in the office - I wish I'd spent more time with the children".

Do you think in 25 years time when you're on the point of retiring, that you will wish you'd spent more time in the office?

aloha · 22/09/2005 23:39

I was moved to tears by that programme tonight.

Me too, aloha.

They did. He's a Lib Dem councillor in Cumbria now. He's the one that made me cry.

some people just cant understand that your not a go getter trample on other people to get to the top type person.

my boss is the same - he doesnt get it, then he hasn't got kids

debutante · 23/09/2005 00:11

what had turned things around for him?

It wasn't altogether clear - he'd got into politics in London but I think he missed the countryside so he'd moved to Cumbria. He's a truly decent man. I'm glad he's no longer homeless but I don't think he'll ever be truly 'happy'. Very sad - especially contrasted with the shots of the gorgeous, optimistic, funny little boy he used to be.
