we all have to come up with some ways in which the company can save

what has your company cut anything lately?

If an organisation is so big that it needs a consultant to look at costs then it's more likely that switching things off and re-looking at supplier arrangements etc might save £££ enough to save jobs.

But as dietqueen says, in a small office environment two things - firstly the waste is likely to be less significant than in an enormous company anyway, and secondly all the things mentioned are far less likely to add up to a job-saving amount.

Tricky one. All the little things are worth doing but if the employer needs to save so much that it's looking at redundancies, in a smaller business some kind of saving on salaries through hours reduction or unpaid leave is really one of the only ways to avoid it.

Stop leaving lights on overnight.

Stop fully-expensed company cars - just pay hmrc rates for mileage.

Stop free coffee/drinks/fruit bowls etc etc

Ensure canteen recovers costs - not to is a taxable benefit anyway

Shop around to reduce stationery/equipment costs

Delay unnecessary software/hardware upgrades

Ask for suggestions from staff for savings

Offer early retirement or voluntary redundancy packages.

cease having an 'office' and all work out of home?

if you can't reduce hours without affecting the number of clients you take on, ask people to take a pay cut.

if the number of clients is low - consider getting your own team to cold call for new business (if that is appropriate to your business field) or ask for leads from existing clients (if the relationship is good enough.)

up-sell, that is see if there is anything further you can flog to existing clients.

do corporate christmas as e-greetings only, unless there is a sales purpose.

an the xmas party

Ask all staff for ways to increase revenue and down costs - they may have good ideas!
