that i'm not the only 26yr old in the country who's never filled in a job application form.

Have to find a part time job to help cover the bills. But I've not done any work for 5 1/2yrs and I've never had to fill a job application form in.

Don't even know what sort of work I want to/could do - and to be honest not particularly bothered (although I did turn my nose up at one job in the paper the other day - a cleaner in a nightclub - office cleaner I could cope with - but the thought of those toilets........)

Anyhow, feeling completely inadequate and useless at the prospect that I'm struggling to fill in a simple application form - DH says he'll help me - but we're not exactly on good speaking terms at the moment.

Just feel that at 26 I shouldn't be phased my all of this.

Any other person from the church? the choir director, etc?

bobbybob · 10/09/2005 10:34

Friend of the family who has a "good job" that requires them to be honest or handle money (and therefore transfer some of that honesty into their choice of friends).

Parent of one of your kids friends.

Dh's employer if they know you.

QueenOfQuotes · 10/09/2005 10:57

lol Chandra - I am the choir director

DH's employer.....hmm until 3 weeks ago he was employing himself....I was 'working' for the company too - but not sure how a reference my DH would go down

Most of DS1's friends he's only known for about 1yr - although one of the ones I get on well with works at Blockbuster - so is involved in handling cash??

Well it's done - just delivered the application form to Boots (not sure it'll be seen by the person who's supposed to see it as the people at the chemist counter (where I was told to take it) didn't seem to have a clue about it!).

Anyhow, we'll see what happens. Picked up application forms for Clintons and Wilkinson's too

The next ones will be easier - promise.

Choir director, mum, mumsnetter - how can you fail to get a retail job. (The mumsnetter is relevant because it means you can use a computer - and you can use English properly)

QueenOfQuotes · 10/09/2005 20:50

I hope so - they seem to be slightly longer (althoygh usefully at the back of the forms the sheet for the interviewer (if you get that far) is also there so at least I've got some sort of idea what they'll be looking for if I get an interview )

OP posts:
bobbybob · 11/09/2005 19:58

Don't want to nag, but have you called Boots and made sure your your form went to the right person. If not do it tomorrow.

QueenOfQuotes · 11/09/2005 20:04

I'll call tomorrow - there was no point in phoning today as the Wellingborough Boots doesn't open on Sunday's.

But good idea thanks

QofQ-can't you put down someone (head of dept or principal) of PE School as a referee. They are not necessarily going to contact them. Your teaching work must count for something - after all you went abroad and worked, shows confidence, sense of adventure, ability to adapt and get on with people etc. Also your church work is a job, the pay is irrelevant.

QueenOfQuotes · 11/09/2005 20:45

Problem is Clive Barnes (Headmaster) left 3 months ago, and Linda Robert (my head of department) left about 5yrs ago

I've put that job down on the 'employment' history bit - but if they mention about references from there I'll just tell them that the two people who they could have contacted have left

steffee · 11/09/2005 21:19

I've got a similar sort of problem. Not bothered about application forms or cv or anything, but talking on the phone I hate, and I dread interviews. Also, no references, other than one from the OU (who've I've used about 50 times ) and for the past couple of years I've worked for dh, so usually put him using a different surname (naughty I know)

I wish I had the courage to just go to an agency (can you walk in? I usually email but then they reply telling me to ring them and I just can't!) but am going to try boots and tesco in a mo! I applied for warehousing job in Toys R Us which sounds fab but not heard back.

Good luck QoQ

QueenOfQuotes · 11/09/2005 21:23

thank stefee. Good luck with yours.

I saw all three of the jobs I've applied for/applying for over the last few/next few days while walking round town.

They all had adverts up in the windows/on the 'vacany' boards. So it's worth a slow walk around town.

There were two other places I saw on Saturday looking for people - one was a dry cleaners (went in and they told me they were "set hours with no chance of being flexible" grrr). Other one was a shoe place looking for part time staff, flexible hours, but didn't bother with that one.

I know it sounds like I'm being picky, but even on the BUSIEST days of the week it's always empty (which would bore me senseless) and the 3 girls who were working in there on Saturday were really irritating me as I was asking more about it - and I know I couldn't work with them if I had to .

At least Clintons, Boots and Wilkinson's are always busy so there'll be plenty to do, and there's a bigger staff numbers in there so more chance of me actually liking some of the people I work iwith LOL.

I once walked into an agency in desperation (dh had left his job without warning) and they were incredibly helpful so it would definitely be worth a try.

bobbybob · 11/09/2005 21:27

Sorry QofQ I forgot that it was only Monday morning where I live...

I notice you are on the musical instruments thread - do you teach privately?

QueenOfQuotes · 11/09/2005 21:30

I did 'attempt' to start teaching privately last year. But didn't get any takers .

My name is still on the music teachers list at the local (only) music shop in town, so you never know I may get a phone call one day LOL.

The other thing is that it would be really hard trying to teach with ny 2 boys around, DS1 would be fine, but DS2 makes such a noise! I've had to start taking them to choir practice (as DH is working evenings) and there's been one big advantage.........the choir have stopped talking so much as they have to concentrate to here what I'm saying when DS2 is "shouting" (toddler shouts not tantrums) and when he's "helping" me play the piano LOL

I would recommend photocopying application forms so you can fill a spare in with pencil, checking spelling and making sure it looks neat.
You then have a copy to refer to when you get called for interview.(which you will, because your super-neat application will have impressed so much!)

QueenOfQuotes · 12/09/2005 15:19

I photocopied the one of the ones I dropped off today - all 3 said basically the same things.

Now I just have to sit and wait.....

OP posts:
bobbybob · 12/09/2005 20:07

Good for you. If they don't hire you they are nuts.

Someone will call you about the teaching at some point. I waited ages for my first pupil and a year later had 27! I get about a call a fortnight from a friend of a friend type person wanting lessons and have to send them elsewhere.

I made a basic website, submitted it to Google and that has got me about 8 pupils in a year. I auctioned off lessons for $1 on the NZ equiv of Ebay, I gave away a set to a charity auction, and then the lady that won not only carried on, but I teach her son now. Here (working in Christchurch) pinning up notices in the local shops worked really well and I was amazed. Oh and I always tell people I am a music teacher, I once got a pupil from the nurse who did my smear test, so it's worth mentioning.
