Applying for two different jobs at the same company at the same time.

Is this a no no?

I've seen two jobs advertised, one I'm qualified and experienced for, and one which pays slightly more money, and I think I could wangle my way in to(maybe.....or maybe I'm just kidding myself because it sounds like a more interesting job), even though I don't have any relative experience.

Obviously I would have to mould my CV differently for each job application.

Would I look like an idiot applying for both jobs at the same time?

Are the people involved likely to know or is it so huge it;s unlikely? are they in the same department?
I'd do it, just make sure your CVs don't contradict each other, both on the bare facts but also on the message they're sending out iyswim

Anyone else?

I wouldn't. Unless there's no possibility that anyone in the organisation would notice. If you apply for two different jobs I would be concerned you'd come across as though you were just desperate for anything so were chucking your cv at everything, rather than considering what job you really want. In the present climate if I were recruiting I'd only be interested in people who really wanted the job I was recruiting for.

If the jobs are at two different levels the people recruiting at the higher level might take that as evidence that you are not really up to their job, and the people recruiting at the lower level might think you are just trying to get your foot in the door and will be frustrated and applying for more senior roles asap.

ring them up and have a chat? especially about the wangle-y one? have you got the job specs? quite often the spec describes the job quite differently to the advert Hmm IME...

good luck whatever you decide :)

FranSanDisco · 08/10/2010 09:59

I'd go for the one you are qualified for and after interview they may consider you for the second job.

LynetteScavo · 08/10/2010 10:56

I've been considering doing this at two companies.

One of the companies is small, so the same person will definitely read my application. I've decided to jut to apply for the job there I'm qualified and experienced for.

Still undecided about the other company, TBH, I'm not convinced I want to work there, but the money is attractive. Hmm

I wouldn't apply for both.

Are you working at the moment? If you are then I would go for the more senior role and give it your best shot. If you're interviewed and not quite right you may find they offer you the other role anyway.

If you're not working then I'd go for the lesser role to be on the safe side. You can then prove your worth once you're there.

really fbb? What about a nurse position, equal pay, but for two different teams? Why wouldn't you maximise your chances?

flowerybeanbag · 10/10/2010 11:49

no idea about recruiting nurses, but if it was the same job, same pay in two teams, that's a bit different. In the OPs position I wouldn't agree that it would maximise her chances of getting either job.

yes, fair enough
(SPB, by the way :o)
