I'm really interested in becoming a Nurse, im am currently doing an English and Maths GCSE at college and am well on my way for A grades, i also have a place on an Allied Health access course at college next year.

Is anyone an Adult Nurse? Can you tell me about your training? What you had to do, what qualifications you need and how long it takes?

I know its going to be years and im really only just getting started but am keen to know what i will have to achieve to get there.

Hello

I am an adult trained nurse. I qualified in 1998 and did the diplome in nursing. The course is 3 years. The diploma is still available although from 2013 (earlier in some areas) it will be a degree programme only.

I trained staright from school but today you need to have 5 GCSEs and eveidence of recent study, most mature student find they have to do an access course (1 or 2 yrs), be careful that you choose one that is recognised officially by the university that you will be applying to to do your training.

Training is a mix of practical work and theory to back it up, with on going coursework and exams (theory and practical).

You have different placements in varied areas to give a variety of experience.

Diploma students currently receive a bursary whilst they are training but I'm not sure if this will change when it becomes purely degree level

I have recently gone back to uni and have qulaified as a HV too.

As MrsJamesMartin says it'll be a 3 year course once you've acheived your Access to Health Course.

Contact your local Uni for details about whether they will offer a Diploma or will it be a degree course. It will be in your best interests to get the degree. I qualified a million years long time ago and have had to study whilst working to improve my qualifications to a diploma and am nearing the end of my degree. I'm thinking of doing my Masters next!

Good luck, I love it!
