Tips for CV picture

Got tons of pics, but none of them is suitable for my CV (you know, plain background, etc.). So I have to take a new one, what'd you do, going into a photo booth or maybe something a bit more original? I work in the design industyr.

Do you have one that you like as a photo? I used paint to blank out the background on a photo of DS and it looks great. It took about an hour of messing to get it right but was worth it.

The alternative is to tart yourself up, find a plain wall in the house and get someone to take loads of photos with the digital camera - one will be the right shot! It only needs to be small for the CV anyway.

Why would you put a photo on a CV? My advice (as someone who reads lots of CVs) is don't. Unless your a model I don't care what you look like I'll work out if your presentable at the interview.

Any CV i get with a photo on gets binned so they can't accuse me of discriminating based on the contents of the photo.

Agree with seeyou. Dont unless thay actually ask you to.

I did one at home for DW recently that was to be put on security passes and he organsation's website.

She put her suit on, make up, did her hair as if she was going to work. People like to see someone as they would look at work.

DW sat on a stool in front of a plain wall with Norhern light coming through a window behind me. She sat sideways and turned her face to the camera. I took several shots of her head and shoulders with and without flash at different zoom and picked thr best.

Easy peasy.

Oh, thanks for the advice! What about my online CV? Sites like Monster and Reed always tell you your profile is "more complete" if you upload a pic.

I would still say what I said above. A photo of you dressed as a professional person and as you would like to be thought of at work is the key.

It to some extent depends on your industry. In the end, it is just an image and the important thing is to get to the interview. Ask yourself what is the typical image people in the industry like to project. If you must get a photo, then get you hair done, get a grey/dark suit jacket and a good shirt/blouse and get a friend to do one properly. Keep the digital image in your computer for use in several places. I had one done 10 years ago, used to put it on the back of all my presentations. A least people remember a face.

hairytriangle · 29/09/2010 22:34

My advice would be not to include a picture. Employers care about what you can do and will see what you look likenif you get an interview.

Talkinpeace · 30/09/2010 14:01

)))Pictures on CVs(((
A CV should include information about your skills
not what you look like, your age, sex, race or disabilities

GetOrfMoiLand · 30/09/2010 14:05

Christ, don't include a pic on your CV unless you are applying to work in Hooters.

StealthPolarBear · 30/09/2010 14:06

No, unless your appearance is relevant do not include a picture!
I wonder whether it's different in america and these are based on american practices

vinvinoveritas · 05/10/2010 16:48

No I used to sift through CVs and never respected applicants with photos on their CV, never ever!
UNLESS you are applying for a job where image is important
Your job is an arty/designy job
You are requested to do so

Incidentally UoCambridge now request photos from all applicants Shock I don't see how this can be entirely lawful

GrendelsMum · 06/10/2010 20:13

The photos the University asks for are because (almost) everyone is interviewed, and when people talk over the students they've interviewed at the end of the day, they remind themselves who's who by looking at the photos. Presumably students could say they preferred not to include a photo if they wanted.

Looking round the latest bunch of students, they don't appear to be selected for any one particular look Wink

vinvinoveritas · 07/10/2010 10:57

Grin aha that makes sense GrendelsMum, I was wondering what the purpose was other than removing uglies from the pool

GrendelsMum · 07/10/2010 17:24

I couldn't help wondering whether you thought they were weeding out the ones that didn't look geeky enough!

DungunGirl · 11/10/2010 12:49

Definitely DO NOT put a photo on a CV.
When I am recruiting, those CV's are first to go in the bin!
