Can they do this? Offer job then backtrack?

My little sister applied for a job at a massive chainstore.

You HAVE to apply online(!) and when she did one part of the application wasn't working.

When she was called in for an interview it was confirmed with the IT department that this part of the app was 'down'.

She had the face to face interview, they reviewed her CV and she went home.

2 hours later she got a call to say she had the job and would start Saturday.

She was told what uniform she would need and she bought it.

Yesterday they asked her to do the 'other part' of the interview, the manager who called said it was just a 'formaility' and was just something that had to be 'ticked' not to worry etc, the job was hers.

She did the 75 question questionnaire and then got a phone call from the manager saying she had not scored enough points so they were not allowed to offer her the job!

my sister is in pieces.

any advice? :(

That sounds awful. Your poor sister!

Did she take it up with them there and then? I'd be really cross and if I got no joy there, I'd approach head office and complain there as well.

Sadly, I don't think a verbal offer is binding, much though you would hope it was. Firms would normally follow up with some kind of offer in writing, and a contract, and that's when it's official. Either way, it's blardy bad practice to offer and then renege in that way.

No, she is only 16 and just out of school she is very shy and wouldn't question them, she just sort of said 'ok' :(

Oh that's an awful introduction to work.

Gwaaaan, name and shame Grin

Shes really upset, shes been telling everyone about her new job and she was hoping to start working in a section of the store that relates to her college course so was really chuffed :(

I wonder if she can take the uniform back at the very least. Poor girl - what a horrible introduction to the world of work :(

(it wasn't B&Q was it? I got turned down from them for 'having trouble with authority' :o)

Is the uniform something she could use with another employer? I hope so.

I would definitely complain about their recruitment procedures.

TotorosOcarina · 18/09/2010 20:24

yea it was just black pants/ white shirt.

Shes been going there for 6 months trying to get a job since she did her work experience there.

What a way to knock the poor girl's confidence!
Did she receive any written confirmation of the job? If she did then that is binding and they need to follow it up.

It would be worth writing to the head office about how the manager has gone about this.
