Is jobseekers allowance dependant on household income?

Or can anyone claim it as long as they are actively seeking work?

Is it? Oh no Sad
basically I'm going to be made redundant and I don't think we'll be able to afford all our outgoings on just dh's salary
he's on 28k in south east

As you have been working (but depending how long) you should be able to claim contribution based JSA - it is nothing to do with your household income.

I claimed it when I was made redundant and DP's salary is £23k.

So once I'm made redundant I just go along to the job centre or is it possible to do it online? I will be actively jobseeking Sad
I've never not had a job before, I've been working for 20 years
feeling fed up and depressed by it all Sad

You can go along to your local one but it might be best to get the number from the job centre plus web site and ring them - they will make you an appointment. I had to sign on every 2 weeks and "prove" job searches every few weeks to my advisor - it wasn't hard as I was looking and had the proof.

It probably explains what to do on the web site too.

Good luck in your search (I became a self-employed childminder in the end)

Thanks that's really helpful
I don't think it'll happen until early next year but I need to know what to do when it does
they're at the consultation period at the moment but it's pretty much a foregone conclusion

I have a friend who has started claiming contribution based JSA as she was not working. She was told she could only claim it for 6 months as her dh is earning a decent salary. I think she claims around £60 a week.

bigchris · 18/09/2010 13:22

It all depends what they see as a decent salary
everyones mortgages are different, bills etc

My JSA only paid out for six months but I signed on for a year.

Do you have mortgage payment protection? I did and mine paid out for a whole year, which just coincided with me going self-employed!

You have to sign on to prove to the company you are still unemployed and actively seeking work.

You can do it online I think, but only after you've been made redundant, you cannot do it in advance.
