Part time contract after trial - question

Hi

I have successfully completed a 6 month trial of reduced hours (down to 4 days), after a return from mat leave. My manager is happy with how it has gone. He would like to now offer this as permanent but would like to add a codacil that the company have the option to discuss this arrangement, with the option of going to full-time, should the company needs require.
I would prefer not to have this option - what is the advantage to me? And I wouldn't like the lack of certainty re my current hours (although I do appreciate having a job, I know).

I am conscious that if I refuse this offer, they could very easily decide not to offer the reduced hours and just opt for full-time now.
Is it legal to insert this codacil, does anyone know? Is it usual to have sonething like that in a p/time contract?
Many thanks for your thoughts on this.

If all it says is that you will discuss it then there is no harm in it. It doesn't say you have to accept it.

In the future they could decide the job needs to be done FT and ask you to do it. You'd then hae to either take the job or be made redundant.

Depending on your circumstances at the time whether or not the job they offered was suitable alternative employment therefore meaning you don't get redundancy pay would be an issue.

In your case doesn't really matter if its in there or not, doesn't alter your legal position.
