Hmmmm, I work in comms and am doing quite well but after having children (am pregnant with first child) I want to do something a bit more meaningful. Any of you do jobs that you like and would recommend? Am happy to retrain (if it doesn't take years and years and years).

What is comms?

I'd wait until you've had your baby before you make any decisions

once I'd had my first I didn't want to work at all Grin

I spent the time when my children were very young just doing temp jobs etc. and going to college at night and/or 1 morning a week. (They usually have creche places available). I upskilled from Network support into teaching Adults over a period of 4 years and did a voluntary slot once a week to get some work experience. It wasn't easy but it was quite fun and now hold a full time post with our local adult educaiton centre. Mind you with the changes to funding in Government there are less options of courses available to those of us who just want to improve our lot!!

Could you move into Comms for a charity? That way you get to see what other more 'worthy' jobs entail and consider what you might like to move into?

You'll probably have great transferable skills that a lot of charities or public sector employers would appreciate - but the money might not be as good (!) and job opps certainly are fantastic at the moment.

Are you willing to retrain for a period of time?

Just to add to PYT that you can take a fresh look at your skills (free, gratis, no catch) at www.venturenavigator.co.uk/skills
It helps with going through what your key skills really are, taking a step back and thinking what employers are looking for.

Good luck!

I do a lot of getting free books and sponsorship for schools and community organisations with Usborne. It is very flexable too, so perfect with kids, and you can keep your baby with you all the time if you want.

Madbaker - What qualifications did you do for teaching adults?

I did a City and Guilds course in 2000 initial cert in teaching adult basic literacy. Could you point me in the right direction for advice?

Thanks!
