help please,

I am a single parent returning to work now my ds starts full time school in sept. I can finally come off benenfits after 2 1/2 years(hurrah) but there are some pitfalls it seems and need advice. Here are my options;

Job 1.
16-20 hours a week as receptionist using my British sign language skills (just done level 2 BSL), its causal work to start with while they suss me out I guess, hours are irregular incl some evenings and weekend (my ds father is not on the scene) so would have to pay childcare when friends can't help. minimum wage but will build up signing skills,experience and contacts in deaf community world as am training to become british sign lang intepreter in the long term.

Job 2. Administrator in nursing care home, 20 hours a week, permament work, 5 shifts of 10am-2pm (perfect for school)though spread over 7 days. 6.50 hour, would have autonomy, build up cv skills, but nothing to do with signing.

don't know what to go for.....my goal is to be a sign lang interpreter, am also a graduate in history.

Has anyone worked in a nursing home in admin side? is it depressing (not sure I need a depressing job when life is quite tough).Am doing this all on my own, and its seems a big mountain to climb, but am determined to succeed. Your thoughts much appreciated.

Hi there, well done for getting 2 jobs lined up, in these times that's pretty good!

In my opinion you should definitely go for option 1. It's on the path to your ultimate goal, taking you a step nearer each day.

You will enjoy it more because it's what you want to do and not resent going to work as you may do with option2.

Could you try and do some child care swaps with other Mums at weekends and evenings. You have theirs for a few hours and vice versa.

Hope this helps, good luck :)

hi thorpster, thank you for replying. after sleeping on it I agree .....in addition the owner that interviewed me for the second job was v rude, to the point of objectionable, don't think I can manage that level of bullying at work! will stick with job one, lovely people and in right field.
I will take those words with me 'taking me a step nearer each day'....thank you. Grin
