Question re annual leave - is this right?

Just been offered a job but it says that holiday entitlement is calculated on a pro rata basis with reference to complete months of employmnet.

Therefore say I start work on 6 September they are basically saying I accrue no annual leave for the month of September even though I will have wored 3/4's of it. Can this be correct?

Thanks

that's what happens in our place. though I tend to look at it from the "if you start on the first monday of the month" then I'll calculate annual leave from start date. I've got someone starting on sept 6th, they want to start the 1st but employer insists they only start people on the first monday of the month, so they will be getting leave entitlement for sept, but if our HR dept calculated it,they'd be telling me no, but I've always argued this and got it.

Is it NHS? I think this is correct sadly :( I am leaving my job at the beginning of September and they can only work out annual leave entitlement on leaving for whole months worked.

I started on 6th oct once and got leave for that month. County council

Yep, happened to me in my first job. I suppose they have to draw the line somewhere.

I would think that it's calculated so, for example, if you have 24 days a year you have 2 days entitlement on the 6th October, and thereafter for every completed month.

Whichever way you calculate it BellsaRinging you would still end up with most of a month not counting - in your example it would be 6 until end of December.

They do this where I work (professional services) From a legal point of view I don't think they have a leg to stand on, but I don't think it's uncommon.

I guess if they confirm that you get a full months' entitlement during the month you leave (regardless of which day it is) that would then be OK.

but they don't - you lose on the way out too!
