Self employed but no work around. Can you claim anything?

My DH went self-employed after losing his job but the work has now dried up, and he hasn't been able to earn from it for the past few months, so he's effectively out of work. Is there anything we could claim, even if it is only NI payments for him? I did start working through the entitledto site (I think it was) but maths isn't my strong point and I went away with a headache. I do really need to have another go at it, but just wondered if anyone on here was in a similar position and could give me an overview of the position. It has been 7 months now since he left his previous full-time job, if that makes any difference. He has earned a few bits since then but not much. He is registered as a business etc. I earn 42K so that is our household income atm. Thanks in advance.

If he works through a limited company then he may be entitled to some benefits - good guide here www.pcg.org.uk/cms/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=6639:jobseekers-allowance&catid=811:financial-planning-new&Itemid=1324.

It may also be worth going down to your local CAB as they will be able to help with claims for working tax credits/benefits.

He can get NI exemption if he earns under a certain amount (5k ish?). By the way, self employed women should be careful about choosing the exemption as it is only a couple of quid a week, and can mean they won't get maternity allowance.

Also if his business made a loss, it can be used against your income so you'll get more tax credits.
