I have had some problems with my eyes recently.
I have a history of eye problems, which began with detached retinas about 16 years ago, which left me with very little sight in my let eye.
Over the years I have coped well with it and do a job that involves very detailed, close work, which normally is no problem to me. However,I recently had a sudden change in my "good" eye, it is under investigation, I've had a series of tests and I am waiting to see a consultant for the results.

On reurning to work after holidays I explained this to our clinical lead, and was told not to put any preasure on myself and where possible reduce work to a less intricate alternative.
I can still perform my job, however it is very tiring and takes me a bit longer.

Over the last week I have tried to perform to my usual standards, and no one has had any complaints.I've been running the department alone or with very few staff as alot of people are on holiday. However, today someone put alot of preasure on me to do a very complicated piece of work in a very short space of time, I asked if they could have an alternative, or if I could take slightly longer to do the work, and she realy lost her temper, in the end I agreed as she wasn't taking no for an answer.

After sitting there trying to cope with the anger for a while I just decided to go home.
I was so upset that I've realy put myself out, to go into work, but they don't seem to want to make any concessions at all.
I don't know whether to just go to my doctor and get signed off??

After much thought I decided to see my GP before going into work today.
He had information on his computer screen relating to my case from the eye hospital.
He thought I was mad even attempting to go to work, he was very concerned about my safety, concidering the eye affected is my only good eye, and I regularly use high speed cutting equipement.
He has signed me off until I see the consultant but said he will gladly extend it.
He stressed the importance of the cosultant appointment and told me a few important questions to ask,and said to write a list. He also thought I should take DH with me in case I got upset or flustered.
I still feel upset at chickening out of work, but Mum and Dad are coming round to take me out to lunch, the kids are in a play scheme and it's a lovely day.

Totally agree with GP. Don't feel guilty about work. You totally deserve a rest.

hello again jac34! So sorry to hear about all this hassle and I had no idea about your eye problems.
Hope you can sort something out and that you have a lovely day for you, especially as you missed Sunday's family outing.
take care and let us know what happens with work and with your consultant's appointment
xx

(by the way I did have another baby, I now have a DS who is 10 months and totally gorgeous!)

Thanks Cerys,
I feel a lot less stressed after a lovely relaxing day and not having to worry about work !!!
I still need to see the consultant but I'm trying not to get too worried about that, there is no point until I know what I'm dealing with.I'm hopeing it's just what they call"wear and tear", on the back of the eye and that a course of laser treatment will sort it out.

Anyway, it looks like it's another lovely day here, the boys have just gone off to their play scheme.I would have kept them home but it's their last day there and they are having "An Austalian Christmas Day", with BBQ and water play, so I didn't want to spoil their fun!!!

A bit of an update:-

I saw a consultant in the eye hospital today, all the tests they ran came back normal, which was a great relief!
Whatever they saw on the back of my eye seems to be settleing down,(my sight has improved slightly in the last few days), all that they can see now is an inflamed blood vessel.
The consultant wants a blood test as sometimes this can be caused by diabeties( think it's just to check though), but it can also be caused by high blood preasure(mine was sky high when he took it but I was in a hospital), so he wants that monitored as well.
So, it looks like I'm fine and my vision is improveing, he wants me to speak to Occupational Health when I return to work,so they can check out what I'm doing.

Still can't see well enough to drive though {sad}

It's still worth thinking about the Access to Work package though - my understanding is that your employer doesn't necessarily have to pay for the kit, as I think it's a governament scheme. Certainly if you use a computer there are lots of technical things to make text bigger etc. I recently worked with a lady who was registered blind and had all sorts of support, including someone to come in and write up her reports for her (she's a physiotherapist). If there are things out there that can help, then it's worth going for them, even if it's for months rather than years.

Went back to my GP today, he seems quite happy for me to go back to work, as long as I'm not put under preasure.
Sight still not right, but getting better, I think I'll manage alright. Just phoned my manager to let him know, he sounds pleased and said that the person who was horrible to me is very appologetic(proberbly had a telling off),butSHE was very stressed apparently!!!
Imagine how stressed she'd have been, if she thought she was loseing her sight, poor love!!

Still don't think it's any excuse to be unprofessional
