How do bank holidays work if you work part time?

notsleepingthrough · 03/08/2010 20:10

If for example you work wed- friday only are you entitled to any bank holiday mondays? are they prorated?

In the same way if you work mon - wed and xmas and boxing day fall on thursday and a friday are you entitled to extra time off as effectively you dont work those days anyway?

I am confused.

i get time off in lieu so if i did 5 hours a day four days a week i would get 4 hours off iykwim (i think)

NonnoMum · 03/08/2010 20:15

Don't think you're entitled to anything, other than the day of the week they fall on.

Just had my days changed at work to now include Mondays, and I looked with glee at the amount of Mondays that are Bank Holidays over the next year. Sorry to be a bit smug.

choufleur · 03/08/2010 20:17

we get them pro rata, so 8 bank hols a year. I work 4 days so get 4/5th of 8 added to my annual leave entitlement. I don't work mondays so gain more leave. If you work mondays then you have to book the bank hols as leave.

Tootlesmummy · 03/08/2010 20:18

Nonno sorry but I would be surprised if that was the way it works. It usually works that they pro rata the number of hours you work and then divide this to work out your annual allowance. They then take off the hours which fall onto a bank holiday and the remaining hours are what you have left as holiday.
It is unlikely that you will get your annual pro rata holiday allowance plus all the Monday bank holidays! sorry if I were you I would check this.......

bran · 03/08/2010 20:22

Same as choufleur when I was working part-time (except I thought there were more than 8 bank holidays). I think there is a directive that being part-time can't disadvantage the worker, so you shouldn't loose out.

choufleur · 03/08/2010 20:24

New year's day, good friday, easter monday, early May, late May, late august, christmas day and boxing day bran.

choufleur · 03/08/2010 20:24

that's for england anyway.

Tootlesmummy · 03/08/2010 20:32

Exactly, you don't lose out but you don't 'gain' compared to other part timers or full time employees.

notsleepingthrough · 03/08/2010 20:33

having the days pro rated makes sense. However if I for example work mon- wed and there are more bank holidays that fall during that time then I am pro rated entitled to then it is a bit hard that I have to take those odd days off as holiday on the basis I would only have about 15 days holiday for the whole year.

You don't lose out but you just don't gain lots of extra hours/days.
I'll get a copy of our part time entitlement tomorrow (if I remember) and post tomorrow night how it works.

missorinoco · 03/08/2010 20:49

Depends which days you work. I was told that working 60% of full time I was entitled to 5/8 of the bank holidays off. If my working day fell on a bank holiday and I had already had my five I had to take it as leave or work it, even if not down to work.

So for me, it's fine as long as I don't work a Monday, in which case I am stuffed, and would have to take annual/unpaid leave.

In answer to your question, if you work Wed-Fri I think you will be fine.

beepbeep · 03/08/2010 20:51

same as choufleur. Though last year our duties couldn't be bothered to work it out as we had a new computer system so we got all of them!

bran · 03/08/2010 20:52

Yes, you're right, there are only 8. I think I'm also counting the extra days that my work used to close the office over Christmas which they treated as bank holidays in as much as you didn't have to use holiday allowance to cover it.

notsleepingthrough · 03/08/2010 20:56

yes this is the point. I could not work it if the office is shut so would have to take it as holiday when I would not necessarily want this day as hoiday.

Maybe they would let me work an extra day that week to balance it up. will have to check

I work Wed and Thur, so am not entitled to Monday holidays. If Christmas day, Boxing day, 1st and 2nd Jan fall on these days, then they are extra on top of my 14 days.

notsleepingthrough · 03/08/2010 21:01

mm wierd..that seems to go against what all the other postsers have said

Maybe each employer does this differently even if the are wrong to do so

If you work wed to fri - then you should not be more disadvantaged than someone in your coy who works mon - wed, speak to your hr.

nymphadora · 03/08/2010 21:05

I get them pro rata ed

herbgarden · 03/08/2010 21:05

I work 2.5 days a week and share with my colleague - she does the other 2.5 days. I work the front end of the week and she does the back end.

There are 8 bank holidays. I get 4 extra days holiday on top of my entitlement and so does she.

I have to take all of the bank holidays which fall on a working day as holiday. Next year is a nightmare as there are 4 bank holiday mondays anyway before we get to christmas and boxing day...

In 2011 there is Easter Monday, two in May and one in August. Christmas day and Boxing Day then fall on working days so I end up having to take those out of my annual leave entitlement - a pain as DS starts school so I really need the leave.

My jobshare also gets an extra 4 days but next year will only have to use one of them for Good Friday....

Hope that example explains it - some companies don't bother to make you take it as holiday so if you work a Monday in that scenario you must be quids in !

Eddas · 03/08/2010 21:11

mine are pro-rata'd. I work 15 hours a week (tues/wed/thurs) so I rarely am in work on a bank holiday but for every bank holiday I get 3 hours in leiu. My boss did suggest I add it to my holiday entitlement but as they normally fall in school holidays it's better for me to take the hours off that week and only work 12 hours. If it works out that I should be in work on a bank holiday I effectively owe my boss 2 hours, but as I said most of the time they don't fall on a work day because I choose tues/wed/thurs to avoid bank holidays and also try to avoid most school inset days

Oblomov · 03/08/2010 21:16

Every company should do a pro-rata'd calculation. it shouldn't matter whether you work mon or fri. you get a proportion of the days. and then a deduction.

how you get it, as in if its paid money wise or time off, or however is up to the company.

nono is talking nonsense, so if she's getting such a good deal, i suggest she keeps stum !!

Ceebee74 · 03/08/2010 21:19

Herbgarden has explained it perfectly I think - it is always more beneficial to not work Mondays if you are part-time for this very reason. If you do work Mondays, you do have to use some of your own holiday allowance to cover the amount of time you are having off on Bank Hols.

I deal with this query quite a lot in my job so I know exactly how it should work - however, I suspect a lot of companies don't follow this

notsleepingthrough · 03/08/2010 21:48

right understood then. I will need to check that employer will allow me to make the time up for a bank holiday then as I don't want to use 4 days of a pro rated holday to cover the bank holidays I will have to take off. Thanks all

I work part time and get paid pro rata for a bank holiday
I work 3 days a week (Tues - Thurs), and get paid 60% of a normal day's pay for a bank holiday.

If I worked 4 days a week I'd get 80% of a normal day's pay for a bank holiday.

undercovamutha · 03/08/2010 21:55

In my work it is pro-rata'd. So it FEELS like you gain if you work e.g. Wed-Fri, and FEELS like you lose if you work Mon - Wed.

The pain about working Mon - Wed for example, is that you have to use some leave, even though its not your choice IYSWIM.
