Observer article here

Not really interested in stirring up the SAHM v WOHM hornet's nest, but thought that working mums might like to read a different angle for a change

Hanging head in shame at misplaced apostrophe.

lol at all the reactionary comments underneath. Headline: 'Babies lives not necessarily ruined by working mothers'. Reaction: 'FUCK OFF YES THEY ARE.'

Lol - and I thought the MN jury were harsh...

I simply don't understand the vitriol.

And once again every single comment talks about mothers.

Sigh. I am not the only person bringing up my kids, you know.

Of course, no studies have ever been done into any "problems" that might be caused by men rarely seeing their children. It's just much easier to aim it all at the women.

Sorry but I think Siobhan Freeguard should be ashamed to be associated with that article - it's rubbish! I'm a working mother but this whole tone of that article implies that women are desperate to rush back to work and that this is nothing but great news for them whereas actually it's great news for those in government (particularly in the US) who don't want to pay maternity leave. Just sounds like a excuse to make women go back to work as quickly as possible to me.
And can you imagine the tone being the same if they had found the opposite , i.e. that children were harmed by mothers working e.g. 'this is great news for stay at home mums'???

quaere · 01/08/2010 21:44

Haliborange, yes. And then there is massive complaint when mothers get full custody after divorce. Can't have it both ways..

nesomja · 01/08/2010 22:46

Haliborange and quaere, I agree on principle but they do actually address that in the tiny bit of their article which is available for free - they say that since employment patterns for fathers have not changed substantially in the last 50 years there is very little mileage in asking whether children are harmed by having a working father, whilst for women there has been a dramatic shift and so there could be a valid concern. Doesn't address whether the lack of change in men's employment is right though (but that doesn't matter, because the tone of this article is that the women can behave just like the men and no one will suffer).

The comments on that article really, really shocked me. 'Typical feminist claptrap'. This is the Observer! It actually really upset me

clemetteattlee · 02/08/2010 12:45

I'm sorry emble, I posted it to be helpful but the comments are getting a bit out of hand aren't they?

no no I read it yesterday on the Observer website. You'd think people would see it as a good thing ; if the mother does want to go back to work, no harm done. But people are so ANGRY about it!
