Writing a CV - which font should I use

Been told by someone not to use Arial but to use a modern one. Trouble is I'm not sure what a modren one is?!

Anyone got some good suggestions. Thanks

Anything but Comic Sans!

nulgirl · 26/07/2010 17:23

I would only ever use Arial as it is neutral and does not distract from the content. When I read cvs I would look very poorly upon any "fun" fonts

Lilymaid · 26/07/2010 17:25

It depends on what type of business you are applying to. Where I work we use Book Antiqua (traditional look) which wouldn't go down too well in an IT/Media firm.
Times New Roman is standard but rather boring.

cece · 26/07/2010 17:25

Ah someone who used to work in HR told me not to use Arial as it makes you look lazy, due to it being the default font! LOL

Comic Sans always seems to be used by middle aged women who live alone with many cats. Not a great impression you want to give

StealthPolarBear · 26/07/2010 17:25

I'd use Arial - it's the accepted standard where I work

Habbibu · 26/07/2010 17:26

Arial - best to use a san serif font as it's easier to read, and you don't know whether anyone with visual impairments will be reading the .

StealthPolarBear · 26/07/2010 17:26

really cece?? Think my default is tahoma or something like that

cece · 26/07/2010 17:26

public sector/management

Georgia? I don't know what's cool in the world of CVs or fonts.

cece · 26/07/2010 17:28

Ha, now I am confused! Think Arial seems to be winning, so maybe my 'helper' is wrong! Or it just depends on the person who is reading the CV

LOL I was coming on to say "not comic sans"!
Verdana is q modern?

LadyBee · 26/07/2010 17:37

Trebuchet is a nice clean modern font with good italics and bold - it's also reasonably compact which is good if you're trying to reduce length without reducing content too much!

LadyBee · 26/07/2010 17:40

Yup, I'd second Verdana as well - probably more 'standard'-looking for public sector.

cece · 26/07/2010 17:44

Thanks everyone.

I think I will try it in Arial, Times New Roman and Verdana and see which looks best!

Tahoma is a font that was developed for the web as its easy to read on a screen so good if e-mailing CV.

Tahoma/Arial - good standard fonts.

BlackandGold · 01/08/2010 21:14

Definitely Arial

It is the accepted font for those with visual impairments and Dyslexia; easy to read as no "curly bits"
